What is your best backhanded compliment?

Just for the record, sometimes when someone says bless your heart, they really do mean bless your heart. It's all in the inflection. My co-worker had to run pick up her daughter from school today because she was throwing up. She called to say she wouldn't be back to work, poor child even threw up in the car (this isn't a young child, she's in high shcool). I said "poor xxxx, bless her heart". I meant bless her heart, she was having a bad day and I felt sorry for the child. Now if someone told me they couldn't get their Caddy started and their Jag was in the shop, I'd say Bless Your Heart! and then I'd be being sarcastic. It's all about context.
You can tell the difference betweeN well meaning and nasty..

My dear grandmother-in-law, who is no longer with us, gave me the greatest backhanded compliment. I was experimenting with hair color at the time, and I went from brown to bright red.

Grandma saw me with red hair for the first time at my SIL's wedding. She looked at me for a few minutes, then said, "Well! You know, usually dyed hair looks cheap and tacky on women- but on you, I like it!!"

I dyed it back to brown soon after, lol.

New Grandma: Isn't my grandbaby the cutest baby you've ever seen?

Me: He's as cute as he CAN be.

I work with newborns so I hear this all the time! I have to answer some kinda way, no matter how the baby looks!

Reminds me. My MIL has a favorite niece who just had a baby. I have two sons. Every time we go over there, she shows us pictures of him and says, "He's just the most handsome little boy I've ever seen" right in front of my boys. I know it hurts their feelings. Last time she said it, I said, "yes, we sure do make handsome boys in this family." She didn't get the message, though, and kept gushing over him.
