What is UP with the Country Bear Jamboree?

No worries Magpie! :D

It's funny, I went back and re-read my post and was like "WOW, I can totally see how you could read it that way.." So hard on the internet sometimes without tone and inflection.

A good lesson for me certainly and maybe all of us in here somewhere probably. :)

Whoops! Sorry for jumping on the bandwagon! I totally agree with you - it's very much up to each parent to decide what's best. The thought of anyone being able to determine another person's parenting choices (except in extreme cases) scares the bejeezus out of me.
:hippie:

Amen! :thumbsup2

Just remember it's those extreme cases that still allows another parent's choices to affect your kids. Who draws the line as to what defines the extreme cases and what is defined as extreme? That's where it can still get messy.

Boy has this discussion really devolved into a completely different discussion!

Yeah.. this one may be headed to the Community Board. We'll see how it evolves I guess. :)

How about them Red Sox huh? (sidetracking the thread one MORE time..)

I'm in a silly mood tonight!

:rotfl: And see, for me, it's not so much Big Al and his bloody saddle that get me as it is poor little Buford!!

I understand some parents' concerns over things, and it's their perogative to parent the way they want, but I don't think there's anything with the Disney name attached that I would keep my kids out of for content reasons. I remember watching Pinnocchio in school as a kid and (in addition to being terrified at the idea of the boys turning into donkeys, which still creeps me out at age 27) the thing I remember most from watching it as a kid was that they used the OTHER term for donkey...which I think the DIS censors, so I won't even bother typing it. That's what I remember, 20 years later.

There's a lot in lyrics and dialogue, however, that I never picked up on, even though I've been Disneyfied my entire life. I was 9 when the Little Mermaid came out. I've seen the movie dozens of times, and visited the Voyage of the Little Mermaid every single time we've gone to the Studios (which is probably a couple dozen times, easily). Do you know that it wasn't until two years ago that I realized Ariel was 16? It took me 17 years to think about that. Same goes for Aurora. It doesn't BOTHER me, but I couldn't believe it took me that long to think about what that meant!!

I guess a worse discussion could be how 'bout them Chicago Bears! This was a thread about the Bears, right? (Just trying to bring the thread full circle) :rotfl2:

That it's a historically accurate telling of a fairy tale? You do realize when these fairy tales were first told, girls often married between 16-18. If you were 23 and unwed you were considered an old maid. Heck, girls were often married off (witout their consent btw) at age 12-13 to husbands 15-20 years their senior a few hundred years ago. Life expectancy was also in the 30's, so it made perfect sense then.

I'm all for watching what children are exposed to but not when it comes to excluding them from an appreciation of history. There's an old saying. Those who never learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

As for Big Al, his "Blood on the Saddle" song is meant to be a stereotypically sad sap cowby song intruding on the joyful bear jamboree. That's why you get a contest of songs at the end. Most people laugh at him for being such an extreme downer.

Um, yes, I do realize it's a historically accurate way of telling the story. I wasn't questioning the reasoning behind it. And I did say it didn't bother me. My point was that in however many times I've heard Ariel SAY she was sixteen and not a child, it never registered. All those times hearing it as a kid, I never once thought, "Ariel's my sister's age..." or my age or two years younger than me...never thought about it. Please don't feel obligated to educate me on why she is sixteen.:confused3

Although, to be fair, let's be honest - most of those fairy tales ended pretty tragically, and Disney doesn't tell THAT part of the story...

And that's a whole OTHER heated thread. :)

Hey.. Good job getting thread back to the original topic - bears! :goodvibes

:lmao: You're quite funny tonight!

Aww shucks... You're gonna make me blush.

It's been a very long day over here and this has been a fun evening on the DIS... a nice 'break' from the real world.

Thank you.. You've been a great crowd. Don't forget to try the veal, and tip your server .. I'm here till Thursday. (giggle) :rotfl:

:)

I love how all this stuff gets moved to the CB. You'd think that we CB folks were all opinionated people who argue all the time.

Oh...wait.

I...uh...

:headache:

Cool-Beans:

ROFL at your post.. seriously. And I gotta say I LOVE your quote.. I use that all that time in jest with my buds.

:)

Whoa! I never knew there were strong opinions about CBJ. The music there never has struck me as inappropriate, but I get where some of you are coming from. You know what's cool? We can come to the DIS and check this stuff out so there are minimal surprises and awkward moments if there ARE attractions we have parental concerns about.

I could swear that I remember staged gunfights in Fronterland (at Disneyland) when I was a kid. Does anyone else recall that from the early 60s ? I suppose that would be somewhat inappropriate today, in the sense that it might disturb a few people who are not into the Western genre.

Yep, the gunfight was there, at least until 1990!

I was traumatized by Bambi…but I let still my kids watch it. That was a scary movie! ;)

Me, too. That's one my kids didn't see until they were nearly adults  : . They haven't let their kids see it yet either.

We also do not go into POTC, HM or Snow White. We also skip Tiki Room, Mermaid shows, and others that don't fit with our plan in child-raising.

I'm hoping that I don't regret this, but I am extremely curious and I hope that you can see my question as honest wonder and can answer in the same way. What about the "Mermaid shows" doesn't fit in with your plan in child-raising? I can think of potentially objectionable things, things that might bother some people though not myself, in all of the other attractions listed above, but I honestly cannot think of that would cause such strife in Little Mermaid...please no flaming, I'm not looking for an arguement, just an ending to my curiosity.

I went when I was younger and saw this show, and I just got back from taking my kids to see it- 3 and 4....was it always so disturbing??? I dont remember them singing about "blood on the streets" and "all the guys that turn me on, turn me down!" I couldnt believe it. Am I the only one who thinks this is inappropriate??

No problem from this side of the street.:confused3
