what is up with car rental prices!!?!

Airfare is dropping like crazy and my car rental price has been the same forever..........(well, it seems like forever.) hopefully, it'll go down soon. checkin every day - sometimes twice.

They usually go down towards the end of summer/early fall. The last 2 years I've booked my next trips during those times and got great rates. I paid $107 including tax for a week at National, Emerald Aisle with $15 Entertainment Coupon for trips this past December, February and May. All booked around September/October.

It may depend on when you are renting and the company you are using. When I rented an SUV in mid-January this year, I reserved it in December. There weren't any great deals. Some of the phone agents looked through the discount codes & found that there were none in the system past a certain date. Maybe because it was the end of the year? The Hertz person was nice enough to say that this did not mean rates were really high, but rather that they just hadn't released the discounts yet. Sure enough, I checked back a little before the others expired & got a great rate with a new promotion!

booked with National - full size $173 (includes tax etc.) for 9 days. I know this is a good rate but I was hoping to get it to $150. wishful thinking?

Does anyone think the prices will go down more? I just saved $40 thanks to these boards today! Went from $211 to $172 for nine days in September!
