People keep talking about this yummy treat. What is it and where do you get it? :) thanks!

Tonga Toast is served at Kona Cafe at the Polynesian. It is banana stuffed french toast sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar.

Tonga toast has been a must every trip since me and DH discovered it on our honeymoon back in 1990!

It is a thick piece of sour dough bread about 2-1/2 inches thick that has bananas stuffed inside. It is deep fried and tossed with cinnamon and sugar. Yes it is sweet and they do serve it with syrup but it doesn't need anything added to it.

We like this so much that we made it at home once when we were in Mickey withdrawl.

We always go to the Kona Cafe for ours but other versions of this are made at a few other restuarants. Others have also gotten this with strawberries instead of bananas and had it grilled instead of fried.

This trip DH and I are going to share one and get a egg dish to split also. Our tummies were not as pleased with us last time we had it and I barely ate half of mine. I usually have no problems eating anything, but I guess now that I'm in that mid 30's range things are changing.;)

I'm glad deba started this tread! I've heard about Tonga Toast, knew it had bananas, but that was it. We're heading down in a couple of weeks and have a PS for breakfest...I can't wait!!:Pinkbounc Between the toast and the pressed Kona Coffee...::yes::

Yummy!! :D :D

Our favorite breakfast:

At Kona Cafe, DH and I each get Eggs Benedict (the best we've had anywhere!) and we split an order of Tonga Toast on the side. Top it off with fresh pineapple juice and Kona coffee! Then, we literally roll out of there! LOL!

The recipe can be found here:

(So can the recipe for the cheese soup at Le Cellier, Zebra Domes, and fufu.)

(My husband and I split one Tonga Toast and one Eggs Benedict, plus coffee - and we had Tonga Toast left over. It was good, but too rich to eat too much of).

I agree, it's very rich. I couldn't eat all of mine.

I would almost recommend one person getting the tonga toast and someone getting something else and then sharing.

I had mine filled with strawberries instead of the bananas. I think they charged me $1.00 more.

I do believe that Rainforest Cafe also offers banana stuffed french toast.

Strawberries?! OMG, I thought this sounded amazing with bananas...but, strawberries?! Now I am wondering if anyone has had it with a little of both bananas AND strawberries...? Do they have chocolate syrup too? LOL
This sounds like a bit of heaven. I can't believe we stayed at the Poly last year and didn't manage to ever eat this. Guess that's one of the reasons we are going back there. Poly, here we come!

We ate breakfast at Kona on 10/19 and my mom and I both got the Tonga Toast. We each ordered it grilled (since I had gotten it fried once before and thought I could do without all that grease) but when it came out, only hers was grilled, mine was deep-fried. The difference was incredible. While they both tasted similar, hers was much less greasy/oily and you could eat lots more of it than you could with my fried version. I would definitely suggest getting it grilled.

This is one of the most delicious concotions ever. I haven't had it in years, but boy, do I remember it. I'd like to try to make it myself, but I just KNOW it wouldn't be right. My next trip, I will not miss it. I've promised myself.:D

Here's a picture of the yummy Tonga Toast!

Absolutely the best French Toast I've ever eaten.
My seven year old and I share it whenever we eat breakfast at Kona's. The pressed coffee is also delicious. The coffee bar outside the restaurant is also not to be missed. This is something that is a must have on all our trips to Disney. Crisi thanks for the link to the recipe we will be having homemade Tonga toast for breakfast next Saturday .
Make that today we have leftover sourdough from dinner last night.

Good to know you can get it grilled instead of deep fried. We haved ordered tonga toast several times and LOVE it. I may try it grilled next time to save a few calories!

A recipe and a photo...thanks so much, and for all the comments, too. I can't wait to try them!!! You guys are the best!
