What is This Wet Stuff Falling on Us? September 2021 Food and Wine TR! (RL Update 10/2!!)

Day 9, Part 4: I Saw Mel Torme Sing The Christmas Song Here!

After a nice long afternoon break we started getting ready for our next adventure.

Around 4:00 I called for an Uber, which arrived around 4:05, and by 4:15 we were pulling into the Contemporary!

The guard at the Contemporary couldn’t care less about us driving in, our driver didn’t even roll down the window, the guard just ushered us through. Maybe he recognized the Uber driver?

Since the Uber ended up being a lot faster than expected, we had some time to kill, so we decided to browse the shops. I was really impressed with the stores here, they seem to have a lot more cool stuff than the stores at the other hotels. There was a bunch of stuff I wanted to buy, but since they weren’t shipping things back to the resort, and I didn’t want to lug my purchases around all night, I opted not to buy anything.

After shopping it was still a bit early, so we found a table by the window to sit at and relax and people watch for a bit. Finally around 4:45 we made our way down to the second floor to check into the California Grill!

So, funny story (at least to me), I’ve brought up eating here to my mom often since I loved it last time we ate here years ago, and every single time I bring it up, my mom’s response is something like “don’t you mean the Top of the World? Did you know that we saw Mel Torme perform The Christmas Song there? Are they still doing concerts?” Literally Every. Single. Time. I bring up this place that’s the response I get, so it seemed fitting it be the title of this chapter!

Anyways, we checked in at 4:45 and were told they weren’t ready yet, but took my number to text when they were. So we went over to the couches nearby to sit and wait, and at 4:55 I got the text that our table was ready!

We made our way back to the check-in desk and let them know, and were quickly escorted over to the elevators where we were whisked up to the 15th floor. We ended up with a great table right up against the window.

There was even a little Mickey drawn out in sequins on the table waiting for us!

Our server ended up being fantastic, his name was either Chip or Dale….seriously, I made a mental note that it was one of the chipmunks name, but of course forgot which one! :rotfl:

We ended up ordering a bottle of zinfandel to split, and I got the goat cheese ravioli to start.

I had made this ravioli at home about a year ago, and while delicious, it was such a huge PITA to make, so it was super nice having someone else make it for me! I think they changed the recipe a bit since this one had fennel in it, which was fine by me since I LOVE fennel.

We also started the meal with a sourdough bread with this amazing dipping sauce with tomatoes in it, it was sooooo good!

For entrees mom got the salmon and I got the steak.

Now, corn must have been in season, or on sale, because both dishes were extremely corn heavy. Like there was corn in everything. Now, I’m not a huge fan of corn, so while I loved the steak, everything it came with I was only so-so about. It was still a good dinner, I just wish they had some dishes without corn.

Also, just another reminder of what a spectacular view it is from up there!

After we finished our entrees, mom decided she wanted to try the peach crème brulee for dessert, and I got a cut of cappuccino since we had a long night ahead and I need some caffeine!

While we were enjoying dessert, it started pouring outside, so we slowed down eating so we could hopefully avoid going out in the rain.

Finally we wrapped up with dinner, paid our bill, and headed downstairs to the bathroom to change. Yup, change.

We were going to Boo Bash this night, but weren’t sure with the dress code at California Grill that costumes would be allowed, so we brought them with us to change into after dinner. Turns out that was pointless since everyone else dining there that night was decked out in their party costumes!

You had a margarita for breakfast. If that isn’t winning Disney, I don’t know what is. Every cast member I know who was part of Tapestry of Nations says that it was their proudest moment as a performer. It’s super interesting.

I totally agree about the shops at the Contemporary! That's my go-to when hunting particularly hard to get merch. And when are they going to bring back the ship to your resort option (although I'm not sure if that was ever an option for resort to resort or just park to resort?)?? My purchases alone could probably fund the program if they'd just bring it back! It's been a while since I've been to California Grill ... thinking I need to make a trip soon!

don’t you mean the Top of the World?
I remember when Top of the World required men to wear jackets and ties. Your mom probably told you that, too. ;)

That is really cute. :)
I just wish they had some dishes without corn.
Corn seems to be a really cheap vegetable, especially for a signature restaurant. Was it freshly cut off the cob or just a canned or frozen version?

Haha, it really is! Perfect way to start the day!

That's really interesting about Tapestry of Nations, it was so beautiful, and the music was amazing so I'm not surprised! Also impressed at those performers, that was a really long parade!

I really can't believe they haven't brought back the shipping purchases back to the resort, I have to imagine they're losing money by not having it. There were a bunch of times this last trip I decided not to buy stuff since I didn't want to carry it around with me!

The California Grill was really good, although I'm wondering what it's like these days with the prix fixe menu, want to check that out too!

Haha, yup! It was either there or Victoria and Alberts where they had to provide my dad with a jacket since he didn't have one. Heard that story a lot as well :rotfl:
That is really cute. :)
It was a nice touch, small, but nice!

Yeah, it tasted like it was canned corn too. It does seem kinda cheap for a signature restaurant!

Day 9, Part 5: Boo Bash Take 2, Part 1

After finishing up our dinner at the Contemporary, we walked over to MK for the party! We ended up arriving right at 7:10, so they were letting party guests in already.

The crowds to get in this night were a lot larger than the Boo Bash we had gone to earlier in the week so we decided to go through the non-party tapstiles instead, and even though those lines were much shorter, it still ended up taking over 15 minutes to get in!

Once in, we made our way over to Tomorrowland to pick up our party wristbands and treat bags, then made our way over to ride Buzz! There was a short wait for Buzz, but it was less than 10 minutes so not bad at all.

After Buzz we hopped over to Peoplemover! Again there was a short wait, about 15 minutes, but not horrible considering day guests were still in the park.

By the time we got off Peoplemover it was close to 8:00, and since we wanted to watch the fireworks from the boardwalk in Frontierland, we booked it over to that side of the park. We were shocked when we got over there to see that tons of other people had the same idea and the boardwalk was wall to wall people waiting for the fireworks!

In years past we’ve always watched the fireworks from the boardwalk before parties and it has been wonderful since we’re usually the only ones there, so not sure when the secret got out about watching from there, but it certainly has!

We did manage to find a spot to squeeze into to watch, and soon the show began!

Once the show was over, we headed over to Thunder. We saw a ton of people get turned away here since they didn’t have party wristbands. It ended up holding us up quite a bit, but once those people moved we quickly made it through the queue and down to the trains! We were sent to the last car, row 13 of 15, which was pretty funny since all three rows in the last car were full, but there wasn’t anyone in any of the rows in front of us! :rotfl2:

It was a fun ride as always, the back car really is the best!

Looks fun! Love the intense focus on Buzz ... I was actually grateful for masks on Buzz and Toy Story Mania so no one saw my concentration face. :rotfl:I am SO excited to do Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party this year!! 🎃

Did they do anything to get the non-party guests out of the park?

It looks delicious but very labour intensive.

It doesn't even look fresh or appetizing for that matter.

I don't think they enforce that dress code at all!

Your fireworks pictures are stunning!

Haha, I know, mom and I get super competitive on Buzz, I love the pictures we get on it!

I'm so excited for the party this year too, we're still debating on if we want to do just one or add a second. Right now we're waiting to see if they announce any special events for F&W. I doubt they will, but we're not giving up hope just yet!

Did they do anything to get the non-party guests out of the park?
They were pretty good at getting the non-party guests out. Besides not letting people on rides, they had check points around the park that the CMs would not let anyone pass without the party wristbands. The first party we did we were on Main Street when the party started, and the CMs were coming through the photopass lines checking wristbands and making those without them get out of line and leave. They were pretty strict with it.

Love that story!
I love how my mom brings it up every single time I mention the California Grill. I think she really misses when it was Top of the World!
I feel so bad I forgot, I was convinced that by remember it was one of the chipmunks names I would totally remember. Oops!
It looks delicious but very labour intensive.
I took forever to make at home, actually two days of cooking. I'm glad I tried it once, but from now on I'll let the chefs at California Grill make it for me!
It doesn't even look fresh or appetizing for that matter.
Yeah, I wasn't happy with it, even if I liked corn it was still just not very appetizing.
I don't think they enforce that dress code at all!
Definitely doesn't seem like it! We were so worried about wearing our costumes there, now we know we totally can!
Your fireworks pictures are stunning!
Thank you! I'm pretty impressed my phone took such good pictures. I really wanted to get pictures with the fireworks reflecting in the water, but the place we watched from wasn't good for that unfortunately. I'll try again this year!

Day 9, Part 6: Book Bash Take 2, Part 2!

We last left off riding Thunder. Our next stop after Thunder was Pirates, there was a bit of a wait here, about 10 minutes. Definitely not the zero waits from After Hours in the past, but it wasn’t horrible.

As we were leaving Pirates we saw a photopass photographer so of course stopped!

After getting our pictures we headed towards Main Street, but detoured to the Crystal Palace to go say hi to Pooh and friends!

Once we were done saying hi to the characters we decided to head back to Frontierland (I have no idea why we kept running back and forth to Frontierland this night! :confused3)

On the way over we passed a CM saw that I was dressed as a dalmatian and warned me that she kept seeing Cruella all over the park and I needed to be careful! :rotfl2:

Very nice of her to be watching out for us dalmatians.

I ended up asking her if she knew where the 50th Tink statue was, and she actually walked us over to it! So nice.

She even pointed out where the Gus and Jaq statues were, so of course we headed over there to get pictures of them too!

After getting pictures of Gus and Jaq, we headed back to Frontierland and stopped to watch the Cadaver Dans (and Chip and Dale!)

Once the Cadaver Dan show ended we meandered our way over to HM! This was a walk-on which surprised us since it was super crowded back there!

This is a bit random, but it turns out today is the 9 year anniversary of my first avocado margarita at La Cava! (Thanks Facebook for reminding me :rotfl2:)
Nothing like an avocado margarita!
Was also gifted a margarita flight for my birthday....
Sweet!
Once we were done saying hi to the characters we decided to head back to Frontierland (I have no idea why we kept running back and forth to Frontierland this night! :confused3)
Sounds like you were making the most of your party night!

Nothing like an avocado margarita!
It is, by far, my favorite drink in Epcot. I can't wait until September when I can get it again!
This was so nice of them, they had recently stopped doing margarita flights, but still had the glass set, so when they saw it was my birthday they made an exception and did "one more flight"
Sounds like you were making the most of your party night!
We had a great time, but did do a lot of running back and forth. We generally do better when we have a plan of attack, which that night we did not, hence the running back to Frontierland every 15 minutes!

Day 9, Part 7: Boo Bash Take 2, Part 3!

After our ride on HM it was photopass time!! First up was the magic shot by Hall of Presidents.

I love the shots here, two for the wait of one!

Our next stop was some photopass photographers on Main Street!

Woah, it looks really empty in this picture, not sure where the crowds went but it looks like an After Hours party from like 2018!

Once we felt like we had gotten our money’s worth of pictures, we headed back towards Frontierland! (yes, again!)

We made our way back to Splash where we requested the front row, and got it!

After riding we swung by the trick or treat station there, which had moved to a different location from the previous party we had gone to that week. We actually liked the new location since it was backstage on Splash!

We continued to trick or treat around the backside of the park through Fantasyland and finally made our way up to Tomorrowland.

Once in Tomorrowland we decided to ride Buzz again!

We also hopped on Space while we were there.

Next up: Boo Bash Take 2, Part 4! (AKA that time my mom wiped out in Disney World)

Cloe here! Just joining in for what seems like a fantastic trip! Minus the room issues haha I think i missed the post where you mentioned you were given a free stay because I was just clicking the links at the end of each update! but thats awesome! Was that just from complaining about the room? Because that's awesome that Disney would make it right like that!

Also in day 9 part 3 the one picture of you and your mom your are both perfectly situated in front of bushes and you both look like your hair has gone wild! haha

When is your F&W trip this year?
