We will be headed to DL May 19-23 and are thinking about doing one day at the beach. Do you think the weather will be warm enough to get in the water?

Thanks!!

The air temp will probablybe fine. The problem will be the water temp. The water will be pretty chilly but doable if you can stand it. :)

The weather will be gorgeous. (Disclaimer: Okay, I don't have a crystal ball so I guess "should be" is a better choice. :goodvibes)

As for the water, I'm going to disagree with HydroGuy :scared1: :goodvibes

I think the water will be just fine. My birthday lands in those dates. I have never thought twice about planning swim parties. Throughout my life (almost all of which I have lived in So. Cal.) I have had many pool / beach parties for my birthday.

Will the ocean be as warm as July? No, but we've always gone in the water - and you will have plenty of company. The following weekend is Memorial Day weekend when the beaches are filled with swimmers, surfers, etc....

..it may also be hot as blazes...our May trip in 08 topped out at 105. Holy cow...the kids area in Bugs Land with the squirting water things was great :)

I love it when people disagree with me. ;)

In my experience the ocean water is always cold all summer long and usually it is a bit of a shock to get in. In mid-May it is colder still. My guess would be high 60's at best, maybe 65 degrees. Like I said, it is doable. But chilly.

Dreams, if that water temperature is comfortable to you then who am I to argue? To me it is cold. But I would probably still go in myself. :)

Although the weather can be warm, like other posters have said, we've gotten our June gloom early the last couple of years. May can be very foggy and cool at the beaches. Consistent beach weather doesn't really get rolling until July.

One more thought. I could be "May gray or June gloom." Many days in May and June, you can get some early morning fog drizzle. Most of the time it burns off, but there are times when it hangs around for a good part of the day.

If the OP is used to the water over on the Southern East Coast, then it will be cold!! But if you are baking on the beach, then it feels quite refreshing. LOL! The water does warm up over the summer though.

What beach, are you thinking of going to? My favorites are Huntington- (Volleyball, surfers), Newport- (Ritzy, great concrete walk"Strand"), and Laguna-(artsy, beautiful.) Great piers too!!!

Have fun!

Thank you for the responses everyone -- it sounds like we should just try it out and see what we think :) We live in Phoenix and by May, we will probably be just happy to be out of the heat!
