Now, my best friend that I had tutored in high school, her parents gifted me a trip to Japan for 6 weeks (she was an exchange student). The first portion they gifted me was $3000 to cover getting airplane tickets, passport and anything leftover I could use to spend on the trip. In the 6 weeks I got to go to Tokyo Disney, travel up and down the country with my friend, and see so much.

$100k. I was the executor of a wealthy arelative’s estate. It was a difficult process filled with greedy, fighting, mean-spirited kinfolk and just hours of tedious work with her lawyer and CPA. After it was all done, I went to her bank one last time to ensure the account was closed. The branch manager called me into her office and handed me a letter from her and access to a bank account she’d set up in my name. It was cleared by the lawyer that it was separate from the estate. It’s been years and I will never, ever forget.

My grandmother sent each of us grandchildren $3000 one Thanksgiving. (I think it was in 1992) We were all calling each other wondering if grandma had gone crazy. We each also got a little money after she passed, but that random 3K check was the one that really wowed us.

I helped my mom (I handle her finances, but we did this at a time when she still had capacity to be involved) do the same kind of gift for her grandkids. I wanted her grandkids to have that experience of opening the envelope and feeling the love while she was still living and they knew she had made that decision to give that gift.
