OK. Here's the deal. We watched our Disney video from February. OMG... I am way to fat. Now, I know that I have VERY low self-esteem (so low that I hate to see myself in the video or pictures), but I really do hate how I look. So... Seeing as I was 8 lbs heavier then, I would really like to look better in this vacation's pictures/video.

Here are my *clearing my throat*... uh... stats...

Height 5'4"
High 165
Current 142
Goal 120 or under

So... Should I give up all fat/soda (even diet)/sweets/breads and keep calories under 1000? Also, walk every day? Do you think this would work? Or should I go with the "pretend I am sick" liquid diet (i.e. Diet soda/hot chocolate/water) with one small meal a day...

I don't want to get sick before Disney, nor do I want to get sick from eating at Disney ;) but I do want to lose at least 10 lbs.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Karen

(Yes, I do have an ED (in case you are going to suggest that). I used to be anorexic, now I compulsively eat. I would love to eat to live and not be obsessed with food/calories/weight every day. So... I do still need your advice on how to drop the 10 lbs quickly and somewhat safely... Has anyone done this? Come on, I know there are Disney Dieters out there!! Please?

:(

One vote for the "give up sweets and sodas and walk every day diet".

There is no magical cure for losing weight. You have to eat less and exercise more, plain and simple. You can probably lose 5-10 lbs. in a month and remain healthy, as long as you give your body the nourishment it needs to remain healthy.

For the long haul, and given your history of eating disorders, I would recommend you see a dietician. They can give you an idea with your height and weight and body frame how many calories you can have each day and still maintain your goal weight. Good luck! :)

in the weights.....but you are healthy now and stay that way.......go and have a good time in Florida and know that no one there knows you.....that is what I said.....we had a good time cause I was not going to stress about how I looked.....loosing that much weight in that few days is not healthy.....please just be yourself and have a good time ......hugs

Yikes...I think that maybe you shouldn't worry too much about the ten lbs.:D I'm sure that you look great! Maybe just start a slow walking pattern so you can feel more positive. Don't restrict your calories to 1000, you'll get too weak! Have a great trip!:D

I lost 10 pounds in 1 month walking almost every day and watching everything I ate... I wrote everything down. I would have yogurt for breakfast (100 cals.) tea, a salad with tuna or chicken and balsamic vinegar for lunch and something similar for dinner. I was allowing myself 750 calories. it's stayed off and hasn't come back even though I stopped walking... I am going to start again tonight. I felt better when I did it... and I was walking 4 mph at alternating 5% and 10% inclines every 1/4 miles for 4 miles. Thats only an hour on the treadmill. Stick the TV in front of it and I'm golden. I know how you feel though. I have this picture of the last time I went ot LA and I look nasty... When I went this last weekend people who hadn't seen me since then were all telling me I looked great. :) Good Luck. I'm 5'5" and 131 pounds... I am going for 6 more pounds just to be on the healthy side but I wouldn't mind if I lost another 14. 117 is my skinny limit.

Karen....take a deep breath....

....First off...afford yourself some confidence, you are not morbidly obsese! (take that from one who was)

....Second....You can accomplish anything that you set your mind too!...

....Third....Don't look for a 'quick fix'...the costs of those far outweight their mistakenly perceived value...lossing that much weight in that time period cannot be done in a healthy manner.....you body will consume "good" body tissue (muscle) over fat...your metabolism will Slow...nothing you want to happen...if you're seriously interested in achieveing your goal!

....Make an INFORMED, LOGICIAL PLAN to lose the weight you want....judging from your stats (and I haven't had to the time yet to 'do the math') I'm guessing you should be eating about 1500 calories per day...perhaps a bit more...

....Make SMART food choices...you control what you put in your mouth.....low fat, low starch, high fiber will help....I'd avoid all most ALL sweets....change your mind as to what you find and percieve to be "a goodie"....I used to think that 'ding dongs' were "goodies"....now, 1 all fruit popsicle is a treat to me! :)....weight management is like money managment...almost no one wins the lottery...time and consistent persistence will put you where you want to be!

I know you can do this!!! Pm me if you'd like! :)

Best Wishes

zakatak,
listen to goofyposter.. they really helped me out when I was asking the same questions about how much I should be eating and such :)

You weigh the same as me, except I'm a few inches taller. I don't think you should try and drop 10 lbs. in 15 days, that sounds near impossible. I only get weighed once a year when I go to the doctor's. I know when my pants are getting tight! Just watch the sweets, exercise, get in good walking shape and have a good time. Eat what you want when you are there! Get back on the bandwagon when you get home, lose it slow and you have a better chance of keeping it off. Good luck! Believe me you will see many bigger people at the world. Here is my look thin trick in videos and pictures -- stick a kid or character in front of you and look around or over their heads! I never let anyone take a full on picture of me!

As other posters have said, there is no magic way to lose that weight in a healthy manner (ouside of giving birth or amputation, and I don't think amputation is always healthy). As Goofyposter said, cutting calories too much will cause the body to go into "starvation mode", slowing down your metabolism and conserving its fat stores. The body then needs to get energy from some source, it then starts using muscle as a food source. You'll lose weight, but when you return to normal eating you will gain it at a much faster rate because you have less muscle to burn the calories.

Losing weight can be done by making lifestyle changes. It takes approximately 3500 calories to burn one pound of fat. That means you have to operate at a 500 calorie per day deficit to lose a pound of fat per week. This should be done with a combination of diet and exercise. I lost 27 lbs. of fat and gained 5 lbs. in muscle in 16 weeks using the following guidelines.

1) Eat 5-6 small meals per day (this keeps your metabolism working all day).

2) Portion control - since I ate more often, my portions were much smaller.

3) Increase lean proteins, fiber, and veggies.

4) Decrease or eliminate all sugars and refined starches.

5) Alternate weightlifting and aerobic workouts 6 days per week.

6) Allow yourself one free day every week or two where you eat anything you want.

Enjoy you trip.

I feel for you. I'm not showing my WDW photos to my friends who knew me when I was skinny. :o But your goal does sound unrealistic (not that you shouldn't start with the diet & exercise anyway)

However, I've got a few more photo tips...
-- Angle your body-- no complete frontal shots or profiles
-- Chin up and out to avoid the double chin
-- Arms away from body if wearing short sleeves -- they spread out when resting against the body
-- And of course, there's always cropping when you get home :)

Oh, it won't do much for your face, but I can definitely notice a difference in muscle tone after lifting weights for only a week.

If all else fails, have fun, don't worry about pictures (really no one THERE cares what you look like), and plan a trip for 6 months from now when you have a chance to get in better shape. :)

I eat everything and anything in small portions. Start your day with a bowl of high fiber cereal. It will make you feel fuller and help you go to the, you know. :D

Believe me, I hear what you are saying zakatak.
My sister is getting married (at Disney) in less than a month. I had ample time to lose the 10 pounds I wanted to... but did I? No!
Now I am worrying about wearing my matron of honor dress and how I will look in it.
Before we went on our June trip to Disney I tried the Kellogs Special K kickstart diet. The diet is on the Special K box. It allows you to lose approx. 6 pounds in 2 weeks. You eat 2 bowls of Special K( 1 for breakfast and 1 for lunch) and then a regular meal for dinner.I have to say it worked. Granted, its not healthy to do this for an extended period of time.
I lost 10 pounds before our June trip and gained it all back. Probably had something to do with all the good meals on our trip.
And I never want to see another bowl of Special K again.

I guess the bottom line is less calories and more exercise.

The weight watchers weight range for 5'4" is 116 to 140 (145 if over 45 years old). So at 142, you are barely over. I would just eat sensible and walk or exercise.

This is what I am going to do... I need to be held accountable so...

Each day I am going to write down here what I have eaten for the day (not counting calories) and what exercise I have done. Now, if anyone wants to comment, that is fine, but not necessary. This way I can keep track of my progress and see what I weigh on the day that I leave (I will post that too).

I will not weigh myself between now and then.

I will either walk or dance ( ) to music for 30 minutes per day.

I will try to lift weights to tone my arms (the worst part of my body). Does anyone have any suggestions on toning the FLAB of my upper arms? My DH has a weight bench. Should I do the weights every day or every other day?

Thanks for helping me out. If I don't lose now, at least I will have lost and toned by next July, right? :p If I stick to it, that is...

OK... I will check in tomorrow night. Please wish me luck. The first couple days are always the hardest. Especially with trying not to weigh myself!

Karen

At least it will give me something to do for the next 15 days! :Pinkbounc

I was weighing myself once a week and in Excel writing down my waist, hip and thigh measurements. Once a week plus wiritng down how much I worked out every day.

Now I weigh myself everyday and pray I haven't gained anything... I need to back to doing what I was doing... :)

I am a work-out-aholic! When I work out, I do upper body one day and lower body the next. Constantly rotating. I run 10 miles a day, everyday (split up into 2 different times) but you can walk and get the same results. If you walk outside it's harder than walking in a treadmill. I get treadmill syndrome really bad so I can't do that anyways (I get dizzy). Anyways, if you walk at least once a day for 30min to an hour and work out then you'll drop it fast (especially if your body isn't used to it). Also skipping the pop and sweets is a good thing! If you're craving something sweet, you can always grab a fruit & cereal bar. They have fruit jelly in them and only 1.5 gr of fat. And replace pop with Gatorade. It'll become natural to you and you won't even realize it!

Good luck!

One suggestion-wear clothes that fit your size. It's only been 8 weeks since my baby was born and I'm still 4 sizes away from my regular size but I bought a pair of jeans in the size I am NOW and everyone keeps saying how thin I look. Now I know my rear-end is still huge but in these jeans it does look smaller!

I have a s-i-l who is a yo-yo dieter and we can always tell when she is at a bigger weight because she jams herself into her clothes. Makes her look much heavier.

Nikki-nikki---Any suggestions on what to eat to conquer all my chocolate cravings????????

From personal experience, chocolate is the hardest thing to cut back on! And I couldn't find anything to sub for it! So I quit cold turkey! Now when I try eating it, I don't like the taste of it. It feels gritty in my mouth. I know that won't work for a lot of people, I'm weird though. :) But my friend is stuck on chocolate too, and she loves those Orville Redenbacher's chocolate popcorn cakes. (I'm partial to the caramel ones!) But they don't have any fat grams in them... And they do look VERY chocolatey! Maybe that'd curve the craving for you too.

Also, on the photo tips, if you wear solid matching colors that gives a thinner illusion too. It's kind of plain, but it's the person that makes the outfit and not vice versa! And you can always wear a belt or necklace to move the eyes to whatever part of the body you want people to notice as opposed to other areas.

I am also trying to loose. I want to drop 20lbs but would settle for 15lbs. I work @ a Doctors office and we get lunches all the time, those free lunches are not always healthy, but they are free. I try to do a modified weight watchers. First and foremost get rid of the soda, push the water (I drink most of mine in the morning). Eat lots of fruits and veggies. If I want icecream I do the skinny cows or fudge bars. Buy the low fat bread, I eat alot of the Smart ones. Good luck and keep us posted.

One last thing don't get discouraged if you cheat, start back up with the next meal.

Missy :earsgirl:

Someone just today told me they were losing quickly by counting carbs. 100 carbs a day equals 10 pound loss per month. 50 carbs per day equals 20 pound loss per month. They eat Kashi cereal for breakfast. Have no idea if this works, but combined with exercise and lots of water I think it would.
Now if I could only try this suggestion myself!:D
