What is the best gift card to give someone to buy a video game?

Dh is getting the Xbox X for Xmas. I would like to get him a game to go along with it but have no idea which one. He also seems to want one that comes out after Xmas.
I think I am going to just give him a gift card to buy a game he wants/when he wants.
What is the best idea for that?
I was thinking maybe Amazon, Best Buy?

When popular games come out, sometimes it is hard to predict where you will get it from because preorders might be needed or places might sell out. So I would purchase a gift card that allows him to buy the video game from anyone he chooses (years of experience). I would just give him money in an envelope marked, 'video game money'.

my gamers get theirs from a variety of sources so a specific company's card might not work for a specific game (or pre-order deal one company is offering over another).

I would say Best Buy. If you know what game he’s getting you could look it up & see what extras each store is getting. Otherwise BB, it’s got a lot of games. Also I don’t know if you know but games for the new generation are going up to $70.

Amazon. A lot of games are digital now and Amazon allows you to purchase either a physical copy or a download code.

Visa or Master Card gift card or cash. That way they can buy it:
1) for the best price
2) where it is available.

This is exactly what I would do if they want to buy digital games (games without the disc). This is my preferred method, so I don't have to switch out discs when I want to change games, but some people prefer to have the physical copy of the game so they can lend it to friends/family or sell it later.

One thing to keep in mind is you can't buy a gift card with a gift card (typically). So if you buy him a Best Buy gift card, he wont be able to buy an Xbox gift card if he wants a digital game. I think you can buy physical discs from Microsoft with an Xbox gift card but I'm not 100% sure. Their store is very geared toward digital copies of games but one would think they'd still offer physical discs.

My ds25, ds25 kids are big gamers..
The best gift I ever gave them was ea play pass and xbox game pass for a year.
On friday these are on sale at best buy.

EA games have all the sports games and some sim games
Gamepass games change every month but it's nice because if they do not like the game delete and move on.
I hate spending money on games that just sit on the shelf.
And he can use it right away.. no waiting to go buy a game.
