I have been working on organizing about 11 years worth of pictures and cds that I have backed up my photos on. Some of the cds are in jewel cases, some are in the little sleeves, some are in the cardboard type envelopes that came from WalMart when I had to burn my pics on the Kodak picture machine. I would like to get them all in one format in date order so I can find what I'm looking for.

So, my question is, is one method any better than the other? It seems like pulling them in and out of the sleeves would be bad, but sometimes its hard to get them out of the jewel cases.

How does everyone else store their cds?

By the way, I love lurking on this board - so much helpful information and so very many talented photographers.

I use one of the folio style holders.... We have 4 or 5 full of music CD's and I have a large one for storing the Pictures. Just lable them well. Works great and takes up a lot less space then the jewel cases.

Whatever you store them in make sure they are out of the sun and in a relatively stable temp/humidity room for longest life.
I have some cds that were silver and are now orange because of sun damage. have not checked the files on them, it was just games and other non essential stuff.

I would store them on your computer so that you can see them any time you want. We have ours stored on our server and all of the computers around the house display them as their screen saver.

For archival purposes, I would back them all up to two sets of DVDs stored in different locations. Because you have them on your computer, you shouldn't need to pull them out of the sleeves or jewel cases, so the particular type shouldn't matter. I stick mine in one of those 200 disk folders with sleeves.

I would also make it a project to transfer them to new media every few years as burned DVD's and CD's are said to decay over time.

I also uploaded all of my pics to my smugmug account. They have no restrictions on storage, so for $34 bucks a year I have unlimited off site storage, with regular back ups etc.... took a while to upload, but once they were there it is great.... also easy to order prints etc when you want them.

Yes, same here! and you can order a DVD anytime.

Master Mason have you tried the uploader. It is an install and adds an option to your right click menu. I had problems with the windows drag and drop uploader crashing halfway through and large amount. Now I select a set of files and right click for the "upload to smugmug" option. (maybe it is "send to smugmug") It opens an uploader screen where you can choose to upload to an existing galllery or create a new one. I highly reccomend it.

I'll have to look at it... I found that weekends seamed to drop more often I think it was the more people using it.... but I got them all up, so it should just be maintance now.

I have some shots from the game tonight.... so I'll look for that uploader option

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm leaning toward one of those albums with the sleeves in them. I do always make sure I have 2 copies of each cd. I've never really thought of storing them on something like Smugmug. Think I'll look into that too.

Mikeee - I hope your cds (the orange ones) didn't lose any info - even if it wasn't important.
