Sadly, my Dad passed away on Thursday and we are planning his services now. :( Ds & I are putting together a slide show and we are looking for appropriate songs. Dad was 90 so we are looking for older songs. His one request was for Sentimental Journey and we will play that during the older pictures. Mom has requested (I'll be Loving You) Always as that was their song and we will play it during pictures of them. I have so many pictures of him with the family and I would like to find some appropriate songs for them.

Any ideas??

Jill

First of all, :grouphug: to you and your family. I lost my dad last May at 88, so I know what you are going through.

As for a song, how about "The times of your life". It may sound cliche but I think it would be fitting and appropriate. The slide show sounds like such a nice tribute. I'm sure he will be very happy looking down at it.

So sorry for your loss.

I was also going to suggest The time of by life. I also thought about What a wonderful world by Louie Armstrong?

So sorry for your loss.

When my Grandmother passed, we used "I remember You" by Ella Fitzgerald.

At my Aunt's funeral, they played "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins. Very sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss. I agree with disneyfan007's suggestion of What a Wonderful World.

...first of all, and prayers to you and your family....I am just curious [and in NO WAY do I mean to be disprespectful] but, is this common in 'your neck o' the woods'?? I mean, having a slide show? I've been to many wakes (my relatives and otherwise) and I've never heard of that...:confused3
[BTW ~ some great suggestions for songs...]

Every visitation I've been to in my area has has a slideshow playing with pictures of that persons life & family. My great-grandma's visitation was actually Thursday night, and it was really neat to see all the pictures of her when she was young & when she met my great-grandpa. :lovestruc They also played it for about 45 minutes before the funeral started on Friday.

OP, first off, I'm so sorry for your loss. Second, I know these aren't really all songs like you were looking for, but these are some of what I've heard during memorial videos:

"I Will Remember You" - Sarah McLachlan
"Remember When" - Alan Jackson
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" - Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole
"When I Get Where I'm Going" - Brad Paisley
"You Lift Me Up" - Josh Groban
"Times Like These" - Jack Johnson
"Forever Young" - Bob Dylan (this one is my favorite - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sldgunY3Fw)
"Imagine" - John Lennon

 and sorry for YOUR loss, too....that IS kinda sweet - usually, family members make a collage of pictures and sometimes put it on something like posterboard and put it on an easel near the casket...

I was also going to suggest, "I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLaughlin.

When my father passed away, we played, "Goodbye My Friend" (by Linda Ronstadt)...

Oh we never know where life will take us
I know it's just a ride on the wheel
And we never know when death will shake us
And we wonder how it will feel

So goodbye my friend
I know I'll never see you again
But the time together through all the years
Will take away these tears
It's okay now
Goodbye my friend

I've seen a lot things that make me crazy
And I guess I held on to you
We could've run away and left well maybe
But it wasn't time and we both knew

So goodbye my friend
I know I'll never see you again
But the love you gave me through all the years
Will take away these tears
I'm okay now
Goodbye my friend

Life's so fragile and love's so pure
We can't hold on but we try
We watch how quickly it disappears
And we never know why

But I'm okay now
Goodbye my friend
You can go now
Goodbye my friend

And I'm so sorry for your loss.

First of all, I am truly sorry for your loss. :grouphug:

I always tell my husband that I want Josh Groban's To Where You Are at my funeral. It is a really beautiful song.

OP so sorry for your loss. I hope that your memories of him will help you through time time.
"What a wonderful world" Louis Armstrong
"Wind Beneath my Wings" Bette Midler
"Time of your Life" by Paul Anka
"Through the Years" Kenny Rogers
" In My life" Beatles

I'm sorry for your loss.

My Way
And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain

I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets I've had a few
But then again too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption

I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Yes there were times I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out, I faced it all
And I stood tall and did it my way

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing

To think I did all that
And may I say not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no, not me
I did it my way

For what is a man what has he got
If not himself then he has not
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way

Yes it was my way

A later song might be
When I get where I'm Going

When I get where I'm going
on the far side of the sky.
The first thing that I'm gonna do
Is spread my wings and fly.

I'm gonna land beside a lion,
and run my fingers through his mane.
Or I might find out what it's like
To ride a drop of rain

(Chorus
Yeah when I get where I'm going,
there'll be only happy tears.
I will shed the sins and struggles,
I have carried all these years.
And I'll leave my heart wide open,
I will love and have no fear.
Yeah when I get where I'm going,
Don't cry for me down here.

I'm gonna walk with my grandaddy,
and he'll match me step for step,
and I'll tell him how I missed him,
every minute since he left.
Then I'll hug his neck.

(Chorus)

So much pain and so much darkness,
in this world we stumble through.
All these questions, I can't answer,
so much work to do.

But when I get where I'm going,
and I see my Maker's face.
I'll stand forever in the light,
of His amazing grace.
Yeah when I get where I'm going,
Oh, when I get where I'm going,
there'll be only happy tears.
Hallelujah!
I will love and have no fear.
When I get where I'm going.
Yeah when I get where I'm going.

Another good one Dance with my Father by Luther Vandross:

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love to dance with my father again

Ooh, ooh

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he
Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love to dance with my father
again

Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear her, mama cryin’ for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I’m prayin’ for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don’t do it usually
But Lord, she’s dyin’ to dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream

When my dad passed one of the songs I used was Remember When by Leann Rimes. I was able to bring the love of Disney in to a great remembrance song.

Do you remember your imagination?
Where Neverland was a destination
Your magical adventure isn't over yet
Just hold on tight and don't forget

Every wish, every dream you ever had
Close your eyes
And it will all come rushing back
Fly away
All you need is to believe and remember when

You never know where your dreams might take you
So keep them safe and sound don't let reality break you
Feel your sweetest memories come and carry you away
Just get lost in yesterday

Every wish, every dream you ever had
Just close your eyes
And it will all come rushing back
Fly away
All you need is to believe and remember when

Surrender to the innocence
You thought you left behind
And reach the child that lives inside

Every wish, every dream you ever had
Just close your eyes
And it will all come rushing back
Fly away
All you need is to believe and remember when

Fly away
All you need is to believe and remember when

Remember when

I'm so sorry for your loss

I know you said older songs, but I do love another pp's suggestion of
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" by IZ (Israel Hawaiian name that was mentioned) Just so sweet...

Also newer but SO appropriate is Seasons Of Love from the Rent Soundtrack.

I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Jill, I am so sorry to hear about your Father. But it sounds like you have a lifetime of fond memories with him to help you through this sad time.

No suggestions on a song, the other posters have suggested some really nice ones.

Take care.
