what if we don't want to do horror nights?

We're planning our 1st trip in October for the wwohp but noticed Universal has horror nights. Two in our group do not like scary things (ie, scary movies, haunted houses, etc). Is it pretty scary? Also would this have an effect on the crowds? We would arrive Thursday & leave Monday, so it's a quick weekend trip. Advice & tips are appreciated.

Halloween Horror Nights is a hard ticket event which means it starts after the park closes for the day. The Studios closes at 5pm and HHN starts at 6:30pm. You won't see anything other than large props that are too large to move and some signage but that's about it. Crowds start filing in around 3:30pm so you will notice the park will get busier.

Halloween Horror Nights begins at 6:30 pm at Universal Studios, 1.5 hours after Universal Studios closes (5pm) to the day guests. It requires a purchase of a HHN ticket. If you don't want to go, do not purchase the HHN ticket and exit the park by 5pm.

As for how scary it is, that's relative to the individual's fears. I don't find it scary but I do find it extremely fun. On the other hand, my wife has never done HHN as she hates to be scared. I've never attempted to talk her into going as I know she would be terrified and not enjoy it. Fortunately, we travel in a small group, so some do HHNs while the others either hang out at Citywalk or the hotel.

As for crowds, the theme parks aren't bad during the day, especially if you have onsite express pass. The exception being WWoHP at IOA. When we were there last October, WWoHP had large crowds. My advice is to be at IOA prior to opening and go straight to WWoHP when the park opens to beat the crowds. I've also heard that the WWoHP crowds sometimes start to lightening about an hour prior to park closing, but we left prior to closing, so I can't confirm that.
