Sorry if this has been asked before, but a current DVC member we know who purchased directly through Disney said that if you purchase through a DVC resale (such as the Timeshare Store) you can't get all the benefits of membership? We are new to this process and are interested in buying resale......TIA:flower3:

Basically, you can't use your points for Disney resorts (Poly, moderates, etc), or for cruises, or for exchanges in the Concierge Collection. Most people (myself included) think those options are not a good value anyway. IE, it costs a lot of points to make those exchanges, plus a $95 fee in addition. I know some people like having the option, so if you want those options, purchase direct.

What you can do with resale points is book your home resort at 11 months out, any other DVC resorts at 7 months out (pending availability in both cases), and also trade into RCI. The best value of your DVC points is using them for DVC.

i agree with the other poster.

you might lose some (very expensive) "options" by buying resale, but you don't lose any "benefits".

All a DVC purchase entitles you to is a stay at a DVC resort. Anything else is just extra. You give up some of the extras if you purchase resale.

The only "benefit" I see from buying direct is that once you purchase your points they are available to you immediately. Now, if DVC decides to take away some perks (booking windows, resort usage other than home resorts, etc...) then I would think direct buyers would be grandfathered in and that would provide additional "benefits".

If they change the rules on resales, they usually set a date (date of the rule change) and as long as you bought resale before that rule change, the new rules don't apply to you either. For example, if you bought resale before a certain date you can still use the points for cruises and other things, but if you buy resale now, you can't.

They did this once. But there's no telling if they'll do it again.
