What home or OTC remedies did you grow up with?

When my sisters both got mumps, and measles, I didn't. The doctor told my mom "let her sleep in the same room, and eat off their plates" so that I would get them also. She replied "Do you really think I'm trying to stop her from getting them?" We were a military family, only had 2 bedrooms, us kids all slept in the same bed, never mind the same room.

BTW, I've never had measles or mumps.

Thought of one from my grandfather - rub a gold ring on an stye to heal it faster.

That last one about rubbing a gold ring on a style made me think of Aladdin rubbing the magic lamp for some crazy reason.

Sort of inspired by the bad cream cheese thread.

My Italian father was a Brioschi man. He swore by it for an upset stomach, and I remember drinking it, even when I was little, if I complained of an upset stomach. It was lemony and you had to drink it down quickly while it was still fizzing.

Looking at its history, it is an old antacid - invented in the 1880s. It's still around today. I have to remember to pick some up (although if I recall, it was high in sodium). Yes, sodium bicarbonate effervescent - product of Italy. :goodvibes

What about you - what were the go-to's in your family? Include the history if you can.
The first thing I thought of when I read the thread title be was Brioschi

I've heard the castor oil for labor thing is actually potentially very dangerous

Regardless, most of the ones from my family have already been mentioned lol
Peroxide to thin out/dislodge ear wax, and for cuts
Warm olive oil for ear wax too
Vick's Vapor Rub for any cough/cold/flu/etc
Gargling warm salt water for cough/strep throat (still do that and actually just finished doing it as I'm currently sick.. bleh)
Hot toddy (herbal tea, lemon juice, honey, and whiskey) for flu/cold/sore throat (again still do that, been doing it the past 3 nights lol)
Aloe vera for sunburns, that's a well known one
Vinegar, cooled steeped tea bags for sunburn too
Butter for an I-touched-the-stove burn
Drinking water upside down for hiccups (this really works and I have no idea why. Guessing it preoccupies your mind so you can't think of the hiccups and they go away? Lol)
Also I don't know if they make them anymore, but I remember having these gel-like pads that were cool to the touch and applied to forehead/chest.. I think for fevers? I don't remember, but I know they felt nice
Hot shower (steam) for stuffy nose/head
