What happens when your waitlist requires fewer points?

If you make a reservation for an available villa and waitlist for one that requires fewer points and the waitlist comes through, are the extra points that you now aren't using affected in any way? What if you've had to borrow them? What if you are within the 31 day limit when the waitlist comes through?

Here is our situation: Just sent in our closing papers for 250 points at SSR. Hoping for 8 nights mid-January in a 2-bedroom OKW, but know it may be tricky at this late date. (Hope to be in the system sometime between Dec. 1 - 7) I anticipate we'll need to book stays wherever we can and waitlist for getting the whole stay in one spot. OKW requires the least number of points. So, say we are only able to book SSR or AKV for the first three nights and then move to OKW on night 4, but we waitlist for OKW for those first 3 nights. If the OKW waitlist comes through within 30 days of our reservation and we're using fewer points, what happens to those "extra" points that we no longer need for our reservation?

Our use year is June. I don't think we'll need to bank any points, but it's conceivable that we will need to borrow a few 2011 points to make the original reservation if its a non-OKW 2 bedroom.

Borrowed points would remain in the 2010 use year and would need to be used by May 31, 2011 and could not be banked--BUT you can request that the borrowed points be used for whatever days are in your final reservation and you can then bank extra non-borrowed 2010 points into 2011 if you do so before your banking window.
If the waitlist comes through inside of 31 days, any extra points, whether 2010 or borrowed from 2011, become holding points with special restrictions on use. They cannot be banked. That is why MS will ask whether you want to remain on the waitlist past the 31 day mark.
Good luck on getting this all to work out for you!

In your situation, with booking so close to the 31 day mark, I would not even do a wait list that will use less points.

Those would become holding points and have to be used by the end of your UY and only for reservations made 60 days or less. The only time you would want to keep a wait list active up until 7 days prior to arrivel (you can't wait list beyond that) is when it will take more points than you currently have.

And, as previous poster mentioned, borrowed points can not be returned and must be used by the end of the UY they are borrowed in to.

Good luck!
