I am scheduled to fly 9/30-10/7 on US Air..I ASKED for refunds and was denied and told I also had to pay $100 to rebook for the future....My 4 year old is too scared to fly, so no way will I make her......we will wait till spring -HOPEFULLY....but I heard US AIR is in a lot of financial trouble,,,,,will I get any money back if they go under???

We had non-refundables one time on an airline that went out of business for financial reasons. We did not get any money back. Luckily, in a gesture of good will, Frontier Airlines offered to take those tickets for many people on a space-available basis - Frontier didn't get anything for the tickets either; but it was a good public relations move for them. Frontier didn't fly to Orlando at the time, but we had a great "quick" vacation to Washington D.C.

Depending on how long ago you got them, you *might* be able to recover some money if they were charged on a credit card and you dispute the charge (on the basis that the service was not delivered) - but I think you've usually only got 60 days to dispute a charge.

I heard on a radio talk show some years ago that if merchandise or services were paid for but not delivered at all, you can dispute a credit card charge regardless of how long ago or what state the purchase was ordered from. The exact rationale stated was that the credit card company took/accepted/received your money so they are "in the loop / on the hook". I have not heard of any court cases one way or the other.

I do not fault the airlines for returning to their normal cancellation policies with change fees after their schedules have returned to normal, and the only reason you cancelled was fear of flying. However for unusally long check in lines e.g. lots of people checking in nine hours early, or for "boundary conditions" e.g. you wait for the airport to actually reopen before you head off and you miss your flight which was first to take off, I think they should put you on another flight with no extra charge.
