What happens to borrowed points if we cancel December reservation?

We originally had reservations in June for my daughter and her husband to take his parents and siblings on their first ever Disney trip. Then COVID hit. June got changed to July, which then got changed to December. Right now there are 7 nights of reservations beginning 12/26/20. Currently, with the uptick of cases, the family is uncertain if the trip in December will happen, as they may not be comfortable travelling yet at that time. We do have some time to see how things go, but we borrowed a LOT of points (480) from our 2021 February use year to make this happen and if I'm right, I think we'll lose those points if they're not used.

Has anyone heard or seen if Disney is planning to make any changes to the banking/borrowing of points in cases like this? I mean, if Disney is open and operating I don't think they will. If the trip gets pushed out from December to next summer (next time everyone is available) the only way to make it work without getting the banked points back is to borrow from our 2022 use year, which at the moment would not provide enough points unless they relax the rule about only being able to borrow half the contract points. Thoughts??

Right. now, they are returning borrowed points. But, we do not know how long it will last and the longer you wait to decide, you could end up stuck.

It is a tough situation for you but IMO, I’d probably try to get people to decide soon before things and policies change.

I also do not see them changing the 50% borrow rule until sometime in 2021 at the earliest.

That is a LOT of borrowed points and personally I would not risk them. I cancelled my December trip and borrowed points were returned promptly without me doing anything. I'd cancel now.

I would call to cancel to guarantee they be unborrowed. I wouldn't risk just cancelling online and hoping.

We had a December reservation at GCV for Chris week using all borrowed points. We cancelled recently and all the points were returned to 2021.

I just cancelled part of a November reservation online Wednesday and all borrowed points were returned to my original UY yesterday.

I canceled some nights last Tuesday to rearrange something and all but one were returned Thursday...and I am sure they will catch that one this week.

We cancelled Thursday morning and still waiting for points to be returned. But CM did say up to 15 days.

Yes. I was able to switch from pool to standard view at BWV and got back 30 borrowed points. They went back to 2020 yesterday(9 days after switching)

Yes. My reservation borrowed 10 points because it didn’t register my OTU points and they returned my points to my original UY today.

OTU points can not be used to book online. You have to call. I am glad they put back your borrowed points!
