We returned home yesterday from our trip & USAirways messed up with the luggage on our entire flight. We only received 2 bags out of 7.

We went back to the airport a few hours later when another flight from Orlando was coming in & got 2 more for a total of 4 out of the 7.

We are missing ALL of our clothing, all our shoes we took, prescriptions, my glasses, among other things. We just called again to inquire & they still have not located our remaining 3 bags. I am hopeful & I assume that eventually they will get to us, but what would happen if they never do get located & we don't get them back.

Anyone ever had any experience with this?

If they don't find it you get to file a claim for reimbursment.

From http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/advice/20040825a2.asp

When lost is really lost
Sometimes, those lost bags just aren't coming home. So when do you throw in the towel?

"If there's no trace in the system after 72 hours, it's probably not going to turn up," says Hasbrouck.

But there are exceptions. "I would give the airline a couple of weeks," says Foster. First, the claims process is "daunting," she says. Second, a friend of hers had a bag reappear after six weeks. Instead of Minneapolis, it ended up in Japan.

For a domestic flight, the reimbursement limit for checked luggage is $2,500 per passenger, says Anolik. For international flights, it's $9.07 per pound. Each airline will also have its own policies on what it will and will not cover. (Check the airline's Web site for the fine print.) You can usually rule out things like electronics, prescriptions and jewelry, he says.

And don't forget to include the expenses you incurred when the bag was lost, says Anolik. How many hours did you spend on the cell phone talking to the lost baggage office? What did you have to buy to replace your items so that you could continue on with your trip? What costs have you amassed in filing a claim?

If you lost such high-ticket items as electronics or jewelry, consider tapping your home insurance policy to replace it. If it's below the deductible or not worth the risk of escalating your premiums, chalk it up to an expensive experience and move on.

It's also worth checking with your credit card company to see if it covers any of your losses, says Foster.

When it comes to covered goods (mainly clothing), the airline will not be buying you anything new. Airlines most often replace your goods at depreciated value. (Think garage sale, not shopping spree.) Instead of buying you a new suit to replace the 3-year-old one that they lost, they'll likely give you the value of that new suit after three years.

It may help if you have the original receipt for the suit. If you don't (and who does?), you might be able to get a copy of your credit card bill from your card company or a picture of yourself wearing it at that last anniversary dinner.

And hold out for the true value of your goods. If the airline is trying to pay down-market prices for up-market clothes, set them straight. Look to people familiar with the quality of your clothes, such as a tailor, dry cleaner or the manager of the clothing store you frequent, to give you a note to help document your claim.

Just like other areas of life, there is "plenty of room" for negotiation, says Stempler.

"Don't have great high hopes and be extremely patient," says Foster. "It may take six months."

However... since it is USAir it will probably show up. The baggage handlers appear to have decided that since they are being forced to take pay cuts they will take it out on the passengers.... which of course drives the passengers to other airlines. How this helps the employees is beyond me?

Thanks so much.

I sure hope they find them. Some of the clothes in those bags were brand new - took the tags off while they were there. Oh - & souvenirs. Luckily I started to save receipts years ago & I have just about every receipt for everything ever purchased in our home.

USAIR lost ours once as well, they finally found it and delivered it to the house 3 days later.

I think my luggage went many more places than I did that trip

Well, according to their automated phone service & from the e-mail I just received they have found our luggage & it is being sent out at 9 p.m. tonight with the delivery service. We should get it within 4-6 hours after that. I'm hoping because we live literally 5 miles from the airport that we'll be one of the first stops - otherwise I'll be in bed & they'll be banging on my front door waking the whole house up!

This isn't the first time this happened with USAir, but at least they found it.

Figure they will wake you up.

I have never figured out where these guys go but the few times they have delivered to me they arrive in the wee hours of the morning. Glad they found it!

I don't know if this info. will be of any use or not:
While in the Caribbean one of our bags didn't arrive.
My husband spent two weeks in the Caribbean with no luggage (obviously we had to go out and buy him a few clothes). The bag met us at the airport on our departure day. (it spent the holiday in Jamaica , we spent it in the Dominican).

Since it wasn't lost, I did not file a claim right away.
I was told to file a claim since we had to buy new clothes for my husband. I did and was reimbursed for all of the clothes we bought him.

I guess this isn't the case for you since it was misplaced when you came home. But I wonder if you could file a complaint and be reimbursed for the new prescriptions I assume you had to replace.

Funny note: When we finally got DH's luggage back, it came back minus 4 brand new bathing suits (I only paid $1 each for them from a K-mart that was going out of business).
The $300 worth of scuba diving equipment was still there though!!!! Thank goodness.
During the Domincan trip he laughed about "having" to go shopping. He is a shopper, I hate it.

Well, we just got our luggage - ALMOST 48 hours late - not quite though but...................

A brand new Disney bag I bought had the handle torn off of it & our largest bag is totally crushed & ruined. The metal corners are sticking out of it. I was told by the delivery guy that the airline won't cover the handle thing.

I called the baggage 800 # & it looks like we have to now go back to the airport to file a claim within 24 hours!!!!!!!!!!! What a day so far - plus I have to go teach my dance classes tonight, one daughter has swim practice, another has bball tryouts, the other is staying after school & 2 of them have religion this evening.

Send pixie dust hubbies way because he has to deal with all this later on - thank goodness I have to leave!!!!!

Anyway - we got our clothing back, so I guess that's one positive. :D

If it is the regular handle and not a pull out rolling handle they will normally cover it. Take it and ask. I would ask for remibursement on all the luggage. Tell your hubby that replacement of the Disney bag would require the SAME bag. (They may try to give you a comparable bag, but of course it won't have any Disney characters on it!)

I've always had a bit of sympathy for the airlines. If you think about the millions of bags they handle everyday, its a wonder that so few actually get lost! Of course, when it's YOUR bag that's missing, you don't quite look at it that way!

I'm glad you got your bags back. Better late than never!

If the bag that was damaged is brand-new, do ask for replacement value based on your receipt. Also notify your CC company if you purchased it with a CC; it should be covered if you have buyer's warranty protection.

Just one comment about the contents for anyone who might be reading this: You really should never put any Rx item into checked baggage, including eyeglasses. Always carry that stuff on your person, coming and going. If there is a flight cancellation or a major delay, you might need them.

Electronic devices and newly-purchased items are often stolen from checked baggage. This is because electronics can be easily pawned, and new items can be returned to a store for cash. Even if there are no tags on the items, theives can claim they were gifts and get store credit. (Then what they do is get other merchandise with the credit, then take THAT merchandise to another branch of the store for a refund.)

Funny thing is that I usually do carry my eyeglasses with my in my carry on, but this time I thought "we haven't any trouble with our luggage in a while - I'll just put them in my toiletry bag" - my mistake.

Thank goodness I had an old pair at home that was the same prescription. A little out of style (not too bad though) - but I only wear them at home in the evenings & mornings anyway - otherwise I wear contacts! :D

He didn't get a chance to take the bags. We're taking them early tomorrow before our 24 hour deadline is up. I'll let everyone know what happens. I don't expect much, but we'll see.

Been reading of a lot of US Air baggage problems lately. Seems the baggage handlers are upset over the pay cuts with the bankruptcy thing and it is "alleged" that they are messing the system up to make a point.

Most baggage services for USAir are provided by contractors, not employees. Only in Pittsburgh and a few big hubs does USAir provide the services direct. The contract workers did not have any pay cuts, so that excuse doesn't work. I chalk it up to poor overall baggage service in general at particular airports. MCO is usually very good. Most larger northeast airports are horrendous (Philly, JFK, LaGuardia, Logan).

I did not have lost luggage but missing items. I trade disney pins and this past july I put my pins in my checked in luggage. I had over 500 pins but in different bags. I had a miserable time in on this trip due to all different kinds of illnesses, pink eye, blisters, infected toe, etc, all minor. I just wanted to get home so I put everything in my checked in luggage because I did not want to deal with security and the fact that I never had a problem with checked in luggage (and who would steal disney pins unless you are a collector). Well anyway got home and 100 pins were missing. Contacted Delta and they said it was not their problem. Contacted TSA and they finally sent me a letter stating they have received my complaint and they could take up to 6 months to respond. I figure I am going to get a letter saying they are not responsible also. So much for $400. So anything valued, DON'T PUT IN YOUR CHECKED IN LUGGAGE.

That was a hard lesson to learn but you shouldn't put anything of value in your suitcase. TSA has seen enough WDW pins that they may ask you to pull them out but they don't give you any problems.

Update on our luggage...................

DH & I went to the airport early this morning (we live very close to it). The woman in the claim department was the same one that took care of us Saturday night & remembered the situation.

She replaced our large suitcase with a brand new one the same size (I've never heard of the brand). She is sending the Disney "satchel" to their luggage repair contractor to see if the handle can be replaced. If not, they will come to a settlement with me.

In the process I realized that the new luggage tags I bought that say "Disney Vacation Club Member" had been on the handle that was ripped off :( I don't think there's any replacing that until I get to OKW again, which will be in March/April. Oh well - at least we got the luggage & it's contents back & they did/are taking care of the problem.
