actually, i don't think a cane is overkill for a broken toe. when you walk, your toe is a very necessary part of movement and balance. a cane can really help. it's hard to walk without use of a toe.
What caity says is true. I've had both of my big toes broken (at different times) within the past 3 years. It's very hard to walk with. I wish I would have thought to use a cane.
Maybe it is worse to break a big toe, but I've broken my middle toe twice and never had any trouble walking. The last time I broke it, I walked 1 mile, up-hill, out of El Yunque Rainforest on it to get to our car. OK, so I sound like my DGF now. It was also snowing in Puerto Rico at the time.
I broke a few toes when I was in high school, I had a giant rack rolled over my foot, personally I found the crutches to be a bigger imposition than the broken toes. I just wore the cast shoe thing the dr gave me and kept the toes in a padded wrap thing. Maybe it is just me, the crutch digging in my armpit irritated me more than limping a little
