What food do you usually pick up when shopping in the U.S.?

I just got back from Niagara Falls -I live in Ohio & I can't believe how expensive groceries are in Canada! WOW!! I stopped in an A&P to pick up a few things and noticed how expensive things are. I would totally blow my grocery budget quickly it I lived in Canada.

Just wondered are you guys able to order the non perishable food items? For example CVS pharmacy has food that you can order such as crackers and cereal items ect. Might help when you need a fix of your favorite foods!

When I do an occasional shopping trip to Meijer/Kroger with a friend, I usually pick up Jif To Go, Snyders Chocolate Covered Pretzels, PB Uncrustables, Meijer brand pop, Rice Krispy Treats cereal, Milwaukee Pickles, Wyler drink powder singles (get that at Dollar Tree), Raspberry Brisk Iced Tea, Shearers chips (or Downey's if I get to Oakland County), Pop Secret homestyle popcorn (can't stand the "butter" flavored stuff here in Canada)......can't think of anything else at the moment, it's been a while, but I'll come back with more some other time.

But A&P is a notoriously expensive grocery store. Compared to other stores like No Frills and Food Basics where you'd pay less than half on some items at A&P.
I think if we were to order food items into Canada, we'd have to pay duty on them. I'm not 100% sure on that though because it would be food and if you cross at the border you dont' have to pay duty. At any rate, the shipping would be pretty expensive.

Hi. We were in Port Huron for the last weekend of June. We came home with-Peanut Butter Captain Crunch,Tricks,Cocoa Puffs, Honey Butter Mmmm,Caramel Popcorn(microwave), too many, I can't think of them all. We are going over to Buffalo in Aug. for DD's 16 birthday. So we will fill up again.

I enjoy just looking at all the different products when shopping in the states.:goodvibes

Have a great day

It's really funny, but I would have said the exact opposite! I guess it really depends on what type of food you're looking at. Ready made stuff, drinks and such are cheaper on the south side (and those BOGO sales...), but fresh fruits and veggies are priced much higher than here, especially when in season. I paid prices for sweet pepper in the middle of summer that I see only in the crux of the winter season at home. Even went to the farmers market to find out that stuff is better and fresher, but same price. Since we eat fresh stuff a lot (half of our grocery budget), and rarely buy ready made, it costs a bit more for me on vacation in the States. Now cheap wine sure makes up for this... ;)

Went yesterday to do some shopping in Buffalo.

Literally almost:faint: when I saw the food prices there. I could NOT BELIEVE what good prices there were.

We ended up bringing a car load of food back home, and hardly did any clothes shopping at all:laughing:

Thanks Nigel8600,

I know of the Old Dutch name but not sure I have seen those, but haven't been looking either.

We are heading State side in a few days, I will stock up on cereal. I will be looking for Banana bread Weight Control Oatmeal that we can't get here but bought some there.

Chef Boyardee pizza mixes. Don't ask me why but I have loved them since I was a kid. You can't get them in Canada any more.

5 pages and no mention of Yoo-Hoo??? It's no wonder they took it away from us Canadians! :) I also wish we could get EZ Cheese, Keebler cookies, and Cherry Pepsi/Coke. That list should tell you what our last Garden Grocer order was while at WDW! :lmao:

My son likes to get "Cream" from Price Chopper. ( it's a root beer / Cream soda mix ). We also get cereals we can't here like Cookie Crunch. Not to mention REAL Corn Tortillas. mmm...

For me, the beer snob, I LOVE to get myself a case of Magic Hat Beer. ( And/or sometimes Rogue Ales or Dogfish Head ). Assuming I'm actually there for more than the day. ( I need to be there 2 days to be able to bring that back without penalty )

Well, at least I'm not alone because, like most of the PP's, when I shop in the US I bring home a lot of crap! Oh, it's tasty alright, but it's crap! There's just some kind of voodoo magic that happens when you walk into a Target store that makes everything seem like the greatest invention ever!:rotfl2:

I love Target. They do have great stuff! Not even talking about the food products :rotfl:
