What food do you crave after returning home from a long trip?

Mine is always something I was eating while there:
Vegas---crepes and Gouda cheese from Paris buffet, pizza from Hidden Pizza
Disney---Pecos Bill's nachos (something about their taco meat!) and anything from Les Halles
Louisiana---hurricanes, Cajun Mary's, Cajun chicken poboys, beignets
Mississippi---BBQ, fried chicken, any kind of cooked greens (turnip, collard, etc)
New Mexico---everything smothered in green chiles, blakes lotanurger

Then I get home and it's I can cook, get something from a local taqueria, or Dairy Queen. Dairy Queen is infested with roaches, even in cash register (students working there told me so). All the taquerias taste the same....solid cheese with a layer of grease on top.

We are done with all the sodium, fat, sugar overload when we get home and all want a home cooked meal. I usually make tacos, quick, easy and light.

Mashed potatoes, my comfort food. Made fresh the way I like them. I don't care for the instant potatoes served at many restaurants and end up eating too many greasy fries, which I also try to avoid (and never have at home).

We stop to eat on the way home from the airport so by the time we get home I'm too satisfied to crave any thing else to eat.

This is going to sound crazy, but... water.

Seriously, we have the best water!! We have a filter on our fridge water, but our water is even good straight from the tap. Our local water tastes better than most bottled water, & it is soooo much better than Florida water.

I really, really want to move to Florida, but I know I would miss our water.

As soon as we return from a trip, after we've unloaded the car, we sit down w/ a glass of ice water.

I use garlic, onion, black pepper and chicken fajita seasoning from a shaker not a packet to season my meat and I use a tablespoon or two of chicken base in my homemade beans but that's for a 4lb batch so it's pretty minimal. Not like on vacation where you blow up like the Michelin Man every time you eat a meal.

Haha, I lost 10 lbs on my recent trip for some reason. I did do some hiking but the pounds came off like crazy. I think it was because I ate healthier on the trip than I normally do at home

We indulge but don't lose our minds and our vacations usually involve tons of walking. I had been stuck for a couple of weeks when we went to San Diego last summer and then dropped 4lbs within days of getting back.

The only time I gain massive weight is on my trips to Disney. Because that's pig city. And that's even factoring in all the walking I do over there is which a ton!

New Mexico green chile, always. Often stop on the way home from the airport. Moving to Portland OR in a year or so, don't know what we will do then.

I'm driving through NM in June to Arizona. What are these green chiles you all are speaking of? Is there a meal I should try to eat while in NM?

Pacolovestacos, there are so many places to stop in NM that have green chile dishes, just do a quick Yelp search when you're driving through for New Mexican food. Everyone has a different favorite restaurant, we like Garcias. The green chiles are roasted, peeled, diced, then cooked in a broth with onions and garlic. Sometimes flour is used as a thickener, I have to watch out for that. It goes on top of eggs, enchiladas, stews, burgers, almost everything except tacos. There is also a pasta like sauce made from dried red chiles, so you will be asked "red or green"? You can get both, just ask for "Christmas"!

Forgot to say, the best green chile comes from Hatch NM. The heat varies by crop, in drier years the chile tends to be hotter. Also, there is a dish called Carne Adovada. It's pork slow cooked in red chile, and it's heavenly. Sopapillas are another treat pretty unique to NM.

Now I'm hungry.

I think pretty much any place that serves burgers has the option of adding green chiles to it. Blakes Lotaburger is a New Mexico chain that I stumbled on. It's a fast food burger joint, but reminds me of old style burgers and shakes. There's a place in Santa Fe (blanking on names) that serves enchiladas with either red or green chile sauce, posole, and fry bread. A different place in Ruidoso has the enchiladas but also breaded and fried chiles and green chile pork stew.

Btw if you are driving through on 40 and go through the Laguna Puebla, I highly recommend stopping and the little Indian Arts Center (gift shop and such) and get an Indian fry bread taco. Not associated with green chiles, but still awesome!
