What extras do you add to your car rental?

Most credit cards offer "secondary" coverage, which means if you get into an accident, you have to file against your own car insurance first, and then they'll pay whatever isn't covered (maybe loss-of-use, maybe your deductible). Some credit cards include "primary" coverage, so you'd never have to tell your own agent that you were in an accident.

I never buy any of the extras offered by rental companies. Generally way overpriced and/or unnecessary (like their so-called insurance). Plan ahead and always return the car with a full tank of gas. Even if you fill-up the night before departure you can generally drive 20 miles before the meter will move. I have NO idea how any rental company can detemine if you used 1 gallon of gas, NONE of the fuel gages are that accurate. ALWAYS get a printed receipt when returning the car showing ending mileage/fuel full to avoid mistakes/extra charges. I have never left the car upon return without having someone from the rental company check me in. At busy airport locations, they have employees with those hand-held devices checking you in and printing the receipt.

Another good reason to belong to one of their 'skip the counter' clubs is you don't have to haggle with them about all of those needless upcharges they try to push on you at the counter.

The policy is return it with a full tank, not with a gauge which is at F. I assume the previous renter did the same thing BUT

Some agencies can require a receipt showing you gassed up within 5 or 10 miles. Some were using the cars computer to get an accurate reading. At least one was configuring a wireless connection. They could top off the tank and hit with a service charge if the car needs more then half a gallon.

I do the same thing you do.
