What exactly is on the 'Ohana menu now?

We're thinking about eating there on our trip in October. We've never eaten there before and thought that it looks like a fun and good place to eat at. Everyone is talking about the menu change and it's not good anymore. Would it be good for 1st time visitors? What do they serve now?

Also, I'd like to know how the Rose & Crown Dining Room stacks up and also Spoodles. We're thinking about those places also.

AND..... where's a good place to eat at in MGM. We ate at the Backlot Express and I was NOT impressed. YUCK! Is the Toy Story Pizza Planet anything like the Pizzafara at AK? The Pizzafari was awful, it was like eating cardboard!

Sounds like we are looking at the same places, so I will be interested in the responses you get. The new menu for 'Ohana is on Allearsnet, posted in January. It does mention "Alternative children's selections available upon request." Does anyone happen to know what those selections might be?

Regarding MGM, we really like Mama Melrose's. We became a fan after a trip in 2002 with my sister who not only has food allergies, but due to medication, was on a no sodium diet, and also did not eat red meat. They were amazing in accomodating her. She said it was one of the best meals she had the entire week. Our food, ordered directly off of the menu, has always been very good there.

I ate at Ohana's for the first time in Oct (after the menu change,) and loved it. I can't imagine it being much better then it was, although I thought the sausage had a weird taste, and the vegetables were bland, but I loved the potatoes and bread pudding, and that's two of the things that a lot of the posters on here were mad about. I'll be returning to Ohana next trip.

I've eaten at Pizza Planet and Pizzafaria, I hated Pizzafaria, but thought Pizza Planet was good, actually that may have been the best pizza I've had in Disney, but I think those two places, and the All Star Music food court are the only places I've had pizza.

At MGM, for table service, I've eaten at Sci Fi, 50's Prime Time, Mama Melrose's, and Brown Derby.

Brown Derby had the best food, Mama Melrose's had very good food, and good service, that atmosphere at Prime Time is great, and the food is good, but nothing fancy, Sci Fi has okay food, not bad, but expensive and not memorable.

It depends on what's important to you, I'd pick Brown Derby just for the food again, and am also returning to Mama Melrose's.

Ohana's has a fun atmosphere with a good view of Cinderella Castle. There are coconut races for children and a little sing-a-long which adults can participate in. I'm sure it is beautiful if you manage to be near a window at Wishes too.

That being said, I will tell you the good and bad about our dining experience. DH and I (no children) ate there on 2/12/06 after the infamous menu change.

I found the service to be indifferent (but not horrible) - just rushed. Waiter, though friendly, had to be reminded twice to bring a milk for my DH with dessert. But it did eventually appear. Timing was off with meat arriving well after side dishes.

We each had a drink while awaiting the appitizers. Mine was a coconuty frozen drink - sorry don't remember the name (one of their signature ones) and it was yummy but very little alcohol. DH had a nice cold beer.

The menu:
Appitizers: Salad with honey-lime dressing was delicious. Crispy won-tons with three dips (also to use with grilled meats) was not that tasty to me. The dips were ok - I liked the herb/olive oil dip the best. Chicken wings (I only tasted cause I am not into the messy-barbeque stuff) were tender and flavorful. My DH thought they were great. Peel and eat shrimp - great too. I enjoy this rather plain shrimp dish and the shrimp were large and plentiful.

Main course: I found the meat rather unpalatable. DH got some sausage and the beef. I tried the turkey and beef. Dry and salty. Beef chewy. DH said sausage was ok (I don't eat sausage). Sides were good. Loved the cheesy potatoes (give me the CARBS please!!!) and the mixed veggie dish was good - DH particularly liked and he is not into veggies!

Dessert: Banana bread pudding with sauce. Wonderful ending to the meal. I had coffee and DH had milk with the dessert. One of the few Disney places where coffee was good tasting to me - KONA coffee had better be good!

The cost for both of us with drinks was about $77 (without tax and tip).

It was a fun experience but it was not a restaurant I care to go to again. Watch out if you are near the aisle where the races take place! If you are at the Polynesian, my favorite place (we ate there TWICE) was the Kona Cafe.

I think eating at Ohana's would depend on whether there were children with your group, how well behaved they are or if they need the entertainment that Ohana's provides. It was NOT the best food we had by a long shot.

You mentioned MGM too. We ate at Mama Melrose and found it very good. Especially enjoyed the tomato/mozzarella salad and our entrees - Eggplant Napoleon and 4-Cheese Flatbread were good. (I thought the cheese was too strong on the flatbread but DH said that was "just me"). Dessert was OK. Service at Mama's was excellent - one of the best wait services I experienced - friendly and quick!!

Has anyone tried Rose & Crown before?
I'm trying to decide between 'Ohana and Concourse Steakhouse....hmmmmm.
How about Spoodles?
I do know that I'm eating at Le Cellier and Liberty Tree Tavern.
I just don't know. Like I said before, I'm trying to steer clear of the buffets and going for the more coventional sit downs.

We just ate at Ohanas in January. We enjoyed both menus. They only thing I missed was the grilled shrimp. I think the griled shrimp were better than the peel and eat ones now offered (but they were also good). Frankly, I was a bit nervous about the new menu based on numerous posts I read here. We go to Ohanas as it is one of DS's favorite restaurants that has become a tradition. He enjoyed it so much that he printed out the recipes for the salad dressing, cheesy potatoes, and honey coriander wings and made us dinner one night! Everything tasted exactly the same except for the potatoes. They were still very good, but not the exact taste. (He is only 13!). I thought I would really miss the pineapple and carmel sauce but I much prefer the bread pudding. Yummy!

I have one negative thing to say which I have also read here recently. I think with the onset of DDP, the service is started to go downhill. They were extremely busy during our stay and we felt rushed. We just started to eat our appeteizers when our waiter's assistant(?) dropped the potatoes and vegetables on our table. I quickly stopped him and asked him to keep the dishes warm as we were not ready for them. He grabbed them back and threw them on a table to be bussed next to us. The food was eventually thrown away. Initailly I felt bad and thought now our service was going to be really bad but that was the only issue. The rest of our dinner was perfect and we were able to watch Wishes from our window seat. Maybe they need more waitstaff as ours were definitely hustling and sweating!

Overall,if you have never tried Ohanas, I would definitely give it a try!
