Sorry, I'm new to this and am looking at buying some points. At first I was thinking about renting points but after seeing what I can get over the years I'm pretty sure we're going to buy.

Also, can anyone tell me what the perks are to buying through a timeshare store vs. Disney (besides lower point cost) and vice versa? I just talked to Disney and they told me the price per point for SSR is $95 and you can either get a free vacation or an $8/point rebate, making it $87/point, which makes more sense to me - am I correct in assuming this?

Thanks for your help all. This board has been a HUGE help!

ROFR = Right of First Refusal. On all resales, Disney has the option of stepping in and buying the contract themselves at exactly the terms the buyer and seller agreed to.

Try this thread for a good general discussion of the differences between resale and new from Disney. Bottom line? There is not as much difference as you think, but there are an awful lot of factors many don't take into consideration.

Good luck and don't be bashful about posting questions here. There is no such thing as a dumb question BEFORE you buy...

The only perks I can think of are, with Disney, you get a lithograph and a DVC backpack. You don't get those with a resale. Other than that, there is absolutely no difference. Once a resale gets approved and closed, the deed goes to Disney and they transfer the account in their system. Once that happens, there is no difference between resale and Disney.

This is not really a perk, but Disney offers financing. But you can probably use a home equity line less expensively, and many do that buying either from Disney or resale.

One possible perk would be the turn-around time; if you buy from Disney, you can often make your first reservation the same day you put down a deposit. With a resale, you have to wait until you find a contract that suits you, make an offer, wait for Disney's ROFR process, close, then get into the Disney system as the new owner; I've read estimates that place this in the 8-10 week time-frame....
