What does everyone think about forming an ALERT TRAIN?!?

You know when something new is released PMing your contact with the item location and price.


I almost missed that the Sorcerer Mickey Hat was back at the Emporium and I would have been just sick had I missed it.

I have read in several posts people missing this.

So not to overwhelm anyone with having to PM all of their friends, each person PMs who ever is next on the list.

If this is something everyone would like to do just let me know and I will set it up. Or if you have any ideas/input on this idea please post.

I think it is a great idea. In addition, I have partnered with several people that I knew were going away when a sale occurred and have purchased items on behalf of them. Maybe somehow we can incorporate a buddy system with that as well.

Although, I believe this to be a good idea in general, there are times when I haven't received my pm notification for awhile. If I've been VMKing for awhile and don't periodically refresh my Dis boards window, it won't come thru.

So it might be helpful if each of us on the list were to pm 2-5 people. That way, we wouldn't be dependent on one person who's not receiving their pm notice immediately or not being online for awhile. And it wouldn't be overwhelming either.

I would love to help out with this, but I feel that with my un-certain schedule, I will most likely be at work. So how would that be handled? Are you looking for people who would only be around during the day??

Yes me too. I almost missed the Mickey Hats too. Because sometimes I just read the title fast and thought it was just another thread about wanting Mickey hats. Glad I read it or I would have missed it.

I think this is a great idea but i don't think I could do it. When we vacation I do not have access to the internet and it would not be fair to the person or person's I would need to contact.

I think it's a nice idea, but logistically, I don't think it would work as currently described.

- notifying only the "next person" on the list means that if any one person does not keep up, then everyone after them will not be notified. No redundancy built in.

- some people can only log in once or twice a day. with bad timing, someone might not be able to log in to PM the next person, until half the day is gone, and people might not get notification before the item was gone


Perhaps it would be better is people posted the appearance of new items in a clearly labelled new thread, perhaps something like:

*** NEW ITEM FOR 11/4 *** Sorcerer Mickey ears in Emporium for 500 credits

Clear, concise, and informative. People could continuously bump the thread every hour or two, so it stays on the first page.

So not to overwhelm anyone with having to PM all of their friends, each person PMs who ever is next on the list.

Ok so what if everyone on the list sends PMs to the next 3 on the list or we have two lists

Anyone have any ideas on how we could get this to work? If not then we will just have to scrap it.

What's wrong with just going on VMK to find out? If you can only be on for a short time, just go in, collect daily credits, and check the stores. Wouldn't that be easier than having to do the whole train thing?

Every weekend there is something new. So if you don't want to miss anything special, make sure to go on VMK at least once during between friday and sunday.

Mal, this is a great idea and I think you should go for it. The whole PM thing may be a pain and may not work but rather than kill off the idea, why not try it with the people who would like to participate? In the worst case, it doesn't work out and you all decide not to do it. Most likely, you will find the kinks in the system and figure out a way to fix them. But you'll never know if this idea works unless you test it. Is there a way to send a PM to a whole bunch of people at once? If so, that could overcome the problem of people not being available to pass the info to the next person.

I am on a mailing list for surprise releases of pins at WDW and Disneyland. That mailing list came about from an idea like this one, people wanted to be notified when the pins were released. I think there is even a cell phone sub-list for people who are local to the parks so they can go get the pins. It seems to work quite well.

Anyway, despite this being a great idea I had to vote against it due to the second part of the question. The reason is I don't hang out on this board enough to be a reliable person to pass the info to another person. My computer works best when there aren't any extra applications running so I tend to read this board only once per day, usually after VMK closes. Even if I do have the board open at other times, I'm likely to be doing something else so again I'm likely to be the broken link in the chain.

I think it's a good idea Mal....but I think it would be better and easier if (like some others said) the first person to find a new item can post with a subject like "NEW item out! Sorcerer Ears at Emporium!" and then everyone who reads it can post, even just "bump", so it will stay near the top until everyone sees it. If everyone bumps it, it should be clear to all that check the boards as long as the item is on sales.
Then when the item is gone, the thread can be "killed".

A buddy system for buying new things for your buddy when they are on vacation, away from internet access, etc. is a good idea too.
