What do you usually give out to trick-or-treaters?

Usualy the mini candy bars, all kinds. If the turnout is low (like at our last apartment we ask them to take a few) but I just read the idea of a candy bowl and a toy bowl. Others have specific non peanut bowls.

My neighbor does the craziest thing, she works in a dental office and actually hands out toothbrushes and toothpaste! You can imagine the looks on the poor kids faces. She should be banned from Halloween!

Do any of the neighbors help out with cleaning the toilet paper and rotten eggs from her house on November 1st?

We usually give out the 'snack size' bars (not the 'bite size ' or 'mini'; I hate those things; more effort to unwrap than they are worth!). We'll typically buy a bag or two of Nestle brand bars and a bag or two of Hershey brand, put 'em in a big basket in the lap of an alien-headed scarecrow we set up inside our entry, and give a couple of random bars to each kid. One year we had some college students renting a house down the block; they came dressed like they always did but carrying their guitars, drumsticks, etc. and said they were dressed as 'rock stars'...having listened to them rehearsing for a few months beforehand, we decided that they really were costumes!

if they're around 16 and don't have a costume, they get packets of Taco Bell hot sauce.

So how many times have you washed eggs of your car and house? Or cleaned up your smashed pumpkins.

Usually I buy a couple of bags of snack size chocolate bars, milky ways, butterfingers, etc and something non chocolate. Then I give out the stuff I dont like first so if there are leftovers its what I like We usually only get about 10 kids.

I give away big bars of Snickers, Milky Way, Three Musketeers, etc. Sam's sells them in the 30 pack for about $12 and one package usually does us fine. I also buy the 100 count Tootsie Roll pops as extras just in case and for the non-costumed teens. Anything extra goes with me to work and gets put on my desk for my employees to munch on.

This year I think I will give out those little halloween bags of pretzels. They are all pre packaged and come in orange and black bags. I know my son would actually prefer pretzels to most candies.

we don't get too many 'sullen uncostumed teens' knocking at our door-guess it's not appealing for them to manuver around the sprinklers which somehow manage to diverge from their normal schedual and spray range to come on halloween night well after the costumed folks are off the streets and back home (the kids around here are done by 7:30 tops-then there's a lag of about an hour before the older uncostumed come around-and shucks, our sprinklers are going such that you'de get drenched walking up the driveway ).

don't know what i'm going to hand out this year-going to try to avoid stuff we'll be tempted to eat, so maybe decorated pencils. at least with those or something in small bags (like fruit treats, microwave kettlecorn, cookies or chips) we know the left overs will get used in a 'responsible manner'-can't say that for any peanut butter cups around my house

The last 3 years I've been giving out the snack bags of chips.

I bought 3 packs of 150 bags for $30.00 at BJ's yesterday.
any leftover goes to kids for lunch.

We always make up bags. With various candies....mostly Chocolate. However I ALWAYs put a $10.00 bill in one of them!

I remember getting money in bags when I was a kid.....HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!

It is very common to get 16 year olds here, although I am never quite sure who is or isnt wearing a costume anymore! I give out to everyone, even the parents!

I have seriously had only about 5 Trick or Treaters in about 10 years. Not a lot of kids go out but go to happenings and such.

We buy the small assorted candy bars, skittles, taffy, and other small candy. Sometimes I let the kids reach in to the large, black bowl and pick out what they like. I love seeing the kids in their costumes. It is so fun! I might make little bags this year. One things for sure, I will wait until the last minute to buy the candy. I usually buy it a few weeks ahead of time and we end up eating some of it.

I hate it when 16 year olds come in their pajamas and a teddy bear, garbage bag in hand, expecting candy. We might as well hand out cards for costume stores, darn it.

Why such an issue with older kids trick or treating? I give out candy to whomever comes to the door..no matter how old they are...its halloween for petes sake! AndI was quite happy to be in costume at MNSSHP and had my trick or treat bag at the ready just like everyone else. Surely ppl on the DIS can understand the desire to let your inner child out to play??

I think the issue is not as much the older kids, but the older kids with no costumes. If you do not make an effort to dress up, why would you expect anything from anyone? How is walking around in street clothes with a HUGE sack demanding candy at all in the spirit of the day?

My grandchildren get large lunch-sack type bags filled with candy and other treats. Then we make up sandwich bags full of candy for the others. We live in the country where houses are fewer and further between and don't get many trick-or-treaters so we try to make it worth their while to stop.

I've had to work on Halloween the last four years but this year I'm off so I'm looking forward to being able to be home to pass out candy.

I think people feel that if you are truly letting your inner child out, you'll dress up. Just walking around in your clothes just to get free candy isn't really getting into the spirit of Halloween.

We got Butterfingers, Baby Ruths, Laffy Taffy, and Chewy Sweet Tarts. Unfortunately, most of the Chewy Sweet Tarts are in my stomach.... I can't stop eating them!! This is our first year at our place, so I'm not sure how to guage Trick or Treating.
