What do you think of this TV deal on Amazon?

Okay ... for Christmas we are finally coming out of the stone age and buying a flat screen TV. (Our main TV is 20 years old ... but still kicking.)

My husband and I have been doing our homework and learning about new TVs ( ... and this has been very overwhelming. )

I saw this TV on Amazon and it seems like a great deal .... however, I hesitate to buy it since Black Friday might have some better deals.

So, to you TV pros ... give me your thoughts. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I don't know a lot about flat screen tv's, nor do i know much about all the special features that tv has, but i think you could do better on black friday, or even before. Plus, its $99 for delivery.

The general rule is, generic brand HDTVs (Vizio, Dynex, Magnavox, etc) are the best buys on Black Friday, while higher-end/name brand HDTVs (Samsung, Sony, LG) are cheaper 2 weeks before Christmas. Going by the Black Friday ads I've seen so far, this year will be an exception. I'd hold out.

It's a good TV however, since Amazon.com isn't selling it directly, I wouldn't trust it. My plasma HDTV I bought from Amazon.com last year around Christmas and got free delivery. Amazon.com also tends to match Black Friday prices on HDTVs so keep an eye on their site.

I would hold out for cyber Monday which is the Monday after thanksgiving. Lots of great deals then!

If you have a Costco near you, you might want to check their prices. They are usually very good. In addition, Costco adds a 2nd year beyond the manufacturer's one year warranty.

I believe the current issue of Consumer Reports has TVs.

CR reviews LCD and plasma televisions this month, but not LEDs. They do have the LG LCD 47" model 47LD450 as a recommended purchase, with an approximate retail price of $800.

I've been wondering if LG is a good brand. We need a new TV too. Our larger TV won't come back on if we turn it off and it's the pits to have to leave it on all the time. Well, it does eventually come on but not for a while.

This is a pretty good deal, but keep in mind that this model is edge-lit (as opposed to back-lit, which is generally considered better) and the wi-fi is not integrated, so you'll need a separate adapter for the TV. I'd suggest waiting until Black Friday/Cyber Monday to get the most bang for your buck.

PP - LG is a very good brand, but you'll usually pay a little more for the cool factor.

I'm trusting LG is a good brand. It's what we have and I know my dh did at least two weeks worth of research, not to get us the best deal but to get us the best tv He was working under the assumption it's a lot cheaper in the long run to pay a bit more for the initial investment and then have a tv that last years. I can't fault him too much on that. Ours seems to work wonderfully for us so far, we've only had it 3 months though.

We also got an LG blu-ray player and I love that thing. It was so easy to set up netflix to stream on it!

We bought an LG last year on black friday online. We really like the TV. It has a really good picture and sound. DD also plays Xbox on it and it works great. It is a 1080p, not sure about the Hz.

I would hold out too, and since I HATE LCD/LED tvs, I'd recommend you get a plasma. We just got a new tv Sunday since our old one died, we got a 42 inch Samsung plasma TV for 500 at Best Buy. It's only 720p, but because we don't have a blu-ray player, it's the best option for us.

And definitely hold onto your old TV. DH and I had a 26 inch RCA and decided to upgrade a few years ago. We got a Samsung DLP (about $1200) and the bulb went out after 2 years (we still have the TV but I refused to buy a new bulb right away), we got a Vizio LCD and, while we like it, there are times when we have to reset the power strip because the TV won't come on, and the speakers sometimes sound fuzzy, and the TV sometimes makes a popping noise. DH and I joke that our 25 year old RCA is going to outlast them all . I don't think they're made to last more than a few years and onto the next model.

FYI for those of you that have bulbs that go out on your TV's. Ours went out about 6 months ago and while researching it I found out that it's pretty common after 2 years, but you can youtube the how-to videos and order it and put it in yourself. We did this and it cost us 70.00 and was really easy.

I finally did break down and order a replacement bulb, had DH put it in at it works fine but I held off as long as I could on principle. I mean, we have a 25 year old $300 TV that hasn't needed a thing in 25 years of very heavy use, and then we have a new technology $1200 TV that needs a replacement bulb after only a few years of use. DH couldn't believe that I'd rather purchase a new TV than to simply order the bulb, but I'm stubborn like that.
