Ok...my son is in middle school. He had a wonderful bunch of teachers.
They have been teaching for years and years. I think they pretty much have everything they need for classrooms and did not want to get them another mug.
So, I bought a flock of geese for a third world country from Heifer International.
My DH thought it was a great idea, when I told my co-workers they liked it.
I am just hoping the teachers like it too.

This is an update for the few of you that wanted to know what the teachers thought of the gift. One had already told me that she loved it.
Well, we just got a lovely thank you card in the mail from the teachers.
It says... What a lovely and thoughtful gift! It is one that we'll all treasure, knowing how much care and thought you put into selecting it. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and this lovely gesture.
P.S. Can we name one of the geese after "XXX"(only guy teacher), He is a loud honker!

I thought this was very sweet of them.
Thanks for your input...
Lisa

You bought a flock of geese? Just how many geese does it take to make a flock? I've never heard tell of such a thing. Of course when I was in school we never gave gifts to the teachers either.

Its a strange gift, I'll give you that. :cheer2:  :confused3

Could you come pick up the geese from my yard? We have a huge flock of Canadian Geese who live on our lake and they are very irritating. :rotfl:

I might have gone with books for the library or something, but yours is very intriguing. I have never heard of that!

Interesting ,Very interesting ,I only hope they don,t live in an apartment complex! :thumbsup2

Are you joking?

That's as bad as buying a star for somebody!

I personally would buy a giftcard, but what do I know?

I'm familiar with this project, and as a former classroom teacher (married to a current classroom teacher), I would appreciate this gift. Your gift will make a difference (a real difference) in somebody's life.

Good thinking! :thumbsup2

(P.S. Just in case the teachers aren't familiar with what this is all about, I might give them some literature that explains it to them.)

ummm it is a unique idea. But since you asked what we thought, it would not be something I would be interested in receiving. I'm sorry but all I can think of is George Costanza's human fund. :rotfl: :rotfl: sorry, I could not resist.

I am familiar with the organization, and I think it is a great idea!

I busted out laughing when I first read it......followed by "where in here does it say that she is kidding---cause she MUST be kidding."

after that, I read it again, and I think it is a nice idea and a nice gift. I would laugh,b ut then appreciate the gift.

I love it!!!!!

This is along the lines of a donation gift, which I also love.

I'd much prefer a gift that will do someone less fortunate than me some good. I am very blessed, have enough "stuff", have the baility to buy myself what I need when I need it.

I would LOVE this.

I had to admit, I had to look it up to see what you were taking about. Now that I've read about it, yes, it sounds like a nice gift. :goodvibes

Like someone else said, you might want to make sure there's some literature about the program with your gift. :)

Just some additional information on the project. You can also buy goats, cows, sheep, etc. The idea is to help people in a third world country become self-supporting (selling milk, raising young animals to sell to others, etc.). Since many live in such dire circumstances on a day to day basis, this project can have a huge impact on someone's life (on their family's life).

(OP, I hope you don't mind my posting this info for you! :goodvibes )

I gave all of my kids teachers a donation to Heifer International for the holidays. They provide lovely cards with an explaination of their mission/efforts to people in third world countries. This is a very reputable charity! I received many positive comments so I think it's OK as long as you provide some information too! At least I hope so since I did it already!

I think something like that is a unique and nice idea.... as long as the animals aren't going to be slaughtered for food or anything like that. :faint:

There are, of course, probably some people out there who wouldn't appreciate it, but I'd like it a lot!

If you put thought and time into what the TEACHER would like...if you know she supports this cause...it is a great gift.

But if you bought it because YOU think it is a great cause, then it is really a gift for yourself. You should go buy HER something you know she wants or could use.

Since I am a supporter of Heifer International I think this is a great gift. :thumbsup2 Teachers don't need one more Yankee candle, cheap chocolates, funny T-shirts,or a brass apple with their name engraved on it. I would think anybody with a compassionate bone in their body would be proud to be a part of helping this organization. And incidentally, they dont' just help people in Third World countries. After Katrina hit, Heifer International was instrumental in helping some of the Mississippi families who lost everything.

Last Christmas I gave one sister a few sheep(she's a professional shepherd) and the other sister got a water buffalo--or at least, somebody who needs those animals received them. :yay:

Thanks...this is why I thought of it. I thought the same as you, enough of the mugs, chocolate, etc.
Wow...I did not realize some people on this board could be this cruel regarding helping other people.
Some of these comments are not too nice. Oh well, I did ask for opinions and I got them.
Too bad people are not as giving as I thought they were.

#1. Gift card to where?
#2. These teachers have been in the school system forever...they have stuff they need for school
#3. They are always telling parents they don't want anything.
#4. I just thought it would be a thoughtful gift, plus you are helping people that need it.

Geesh! Do you give to any charities?

Lisa

I give to charities and I do lots of volunteer work with local animal rescues, my town, among other things.

I had personally never heard of this organization before and will admit that I still havent read up on it, but I'm more for doing things to help people in our own country. I'm tired of the US having to support every other country for them to get on their feet and be self supportive. We have plenty of people in the US who could use the help. I just believe in helping our own country before going to others, so its not a gift I would really appreciate, but thats just my opinion. I was glad to read though that they also helped people after the hurricane. Sorry if these words are too harsh, but you did ask.

And lastly...#3 on your list might be for a reason...especially if they get more than 1 flock of geese. :rotfl2:
