I am starting VERY early for Christmas 2009. I have a big box of old photos from when I was growing up, I want to scan the photos into the computer and make them into a slide show for each of my siblings. Then for my mom she will have the hard copy of photos in the scrapbook album. What do you think?

I LOVE this idea. You could also upload them into disney photopass and make a book for your mom with their leatherbound books. They are really nice. If my mom doesn't get around to scanning all of her photos, I may do the same thing for her for Christmas. I am sure that everyone will enjoy that.

A great idea! You can also check out Shutterfly.com... they have the best quality photobooks and lots of different options/prices.

I did this for my brother this year for Christmas. I scanned all the old photos I had of him and used CVS to make a "scrapbook" He loved it. Plus they were all on disc so he doesn't have to worry about the photos fading, etc.

That sounds like a really nice idea.
They also have the books at Wal-mart that you can make.
Very thoughtful though.

I just finished scanning pictures from a 1998 trip to Czech Republic and made myself a Creating Keepsakes photobook from Shutterfly. I scrapbook, but never got around to doing this trip. I am so happy I did this, I was even able to journal. I'm sure your family will be happy too.

I think this a fabulous idea - and it's great you're starting early. :) I know a project like this would take me forever, so I've looked into some of the scanning services that do that part for you.

I think you're super smart to start so early! I scanned photos to put in an album for my son two years ago and it ended up taking a long time. I ended up staying up til the wee hours every day until Christmas!

I went through snapfish.com (it was the only photo site I could use at the time, I think because of some Windows Vista incompatability on my computer). It's nice that you can upload photos that stay on their site, just in case your computer crashes. You can pre-purchase a set number of prints to mail-order and just click on the prints/sizes you want when you're ready.

I ended up having them sent to a local Walgreen's so I could pick them up the same day, which cost a little more than the pre-purchased mailed prints but it was nice to have the cheaper option if you allow enough time.

It's a big job but it's a nice trip down memory lane. Have fun!

It's an awesome idea!

Even better than slideshows (which require a computer or a DVD player to enjoy) are hardcover photo albums made from the digital pictures that you can pick up and enjoy anytime. I've used both Shutterfly and Smilebooks and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Smilebooks! I love all the options and it's so easy to use.

There are always promo codes floating around the web for discounts of at least 25-30% off so pricewise they're comparable to shutterfly and the others.

Definitely check them out:

I second Shutterfly's photobooks. I LOVE them, and make one for each of my sons for each year of their life. My dad loved it so much he wants me to scan pics of my late grandmother and make a photobook with them for all our family members. To me they are better than scapbooking (takes less time at least for me) and are of very high quality. Everyone who sees them loves them and I think they are worth every cent. I usually wait til there's a sale and then I order them.
