Just watching the news and the have announced the plan for the new National ID cards, apparently from 2009 they will be compulsory for people working in "sensitive" areas like airports and stuff, also for foreigners here.

Then from 2010 they will be voluntary for everyone.

Although I am a bit worried about giving details for the card scheme as it seems that the Gov are losing our data left right and centre I do think that they are a good idea, I have nothing to hide so I don't object to having one.

What do you all think?

I have never had a problem with having one. I am against having to pay for them though, if the government want us to have them fine but they should foot the bill. After all they have made loads in taxes & extra taxes from the high oil prices.

I agree im not happy about the cost ! i bet it will be enormous :headache:

I agree, the government should pay for them. I have nothing to hide so would have no problems with one.

I don't disagree with them in principal, I have nothing to hide etc.....
As far as the cost is concerned, it depends what they will be used for. I am assuming the ID will NOT replace your passport:confused3 I think it's awful that we pay the price we do to renew a 10 year passport. Just seems like another chance for the GOV to have yet another administrative failure, like Gem says, their record isn't that great lately:rolleyes:

I'll reserve full judgement until I know more.

I have no problem in having one - no real different to having a passport or photo drivers license.

I also think they should be free or available for a minimal fee (<£10).

With the amount of ilegal immigrants, credit card and identity theft that is happening an identity card would be very useful. Although with the governments track record on keeping data safe I am worried about how secure the systme will be.

I dont mind them but i wouldnt pay for it....passports cost enough money as it is!!!

If the government pay for them then we're paying for them anyway.

I love a quote from a French woman who when referring to taxes being used to pay for something said "society will pay".

My DD works at an airport so will presumably be needing one. As yet nothing has been said to her about how or when she will be getting one or indeed who will pay. I fear she will probably end up footing the bill, which is annoying as she had to fork out around £40 for a CRB check when she started working there. I don't have a problem with her having one but I think if employers want their staff to have them they should pay. I will let you know how the process works when she does have to get hers done :)

I completely agree I dont see why this new "idea" has to be funded yet again by us.

I can't believe she had to pay for the CRB check & not the company. If she were a teacher the school would fund it. After all it is the employers requirement so they should foot the bill

I've got no objections to them but, as they are voluntary the people that they are primarily intended for won't get one.

Too true, but they are saying that they will be compulsory for foreign nationals.

I signed up to no2id cards. The cards will be so easy to forge, it took someone 2 hours to get Bin Laden's information on a biometric passport

1 Id cards, if you have to show them when going to hospital what happens when the person who attacks you has stolen your card?

2 id cards are supposed to stop benifit fraud, most of that is people saying they are sick or unemployed when they are not
3 id cards will cause identiy theft once they have that they have everything
4 id cards will not stop terrorism, the men who forced the planes into the wtc and the bombers in spain all had legal id cards
5 if id cards will stop illegal immigration how come countries with id cards still have illegals in them

This is all linked to the nhs data base and the government has already said information on you identity will be sold to people to help finance them. Also look how much id information they have lost already do you really trust this bunch of crooks?
