What do you tell your Child who questions whether the characters are real or not?

I've wondered this too until I thought how much I love the characters and decided that I'm going to keep on telling them they are real even if they are old enough to realize the truth. I can dream, right?

I am almost 39, and know full well mentally there are people in those costumes, but my heart says "It's Mickey!" when I am there.

I feel the same way about Santa. We do not plan to teach DS that Santa is a real, actual person, but a magical part of the holiday fun.

I guess what I mean is actual intellectual belief is not necessarily required to have emotional belief in the Magic. Wish I could explain it better.

ETA: A PP said it way better and I missed it somehow so qioting to say "Yeah that"

She is like me, even if we know it isn't real we embrace the fantasy and magic and just believe because it makes us happy.

I get what you're saying. It's just fun to believe....no harm done.

My kids have never thought characters at amusement parks are "real". I have always told them they are people dressed up in costumes, I actually really never gave it any other thought then to tell them that.

My kids (DS 10 and DD 9) told ME that once we passed under the Walt Disney World Arch, that the rules of the REAL world don't apply, and that the rules of Imagination Land take effect. This allows the characters to come alive with help of people who truly believe that they are real.

That is the coolest thing I have heard in a long time. Your kids sound creative and fun!
