I finally opened one of these yesterday at the bank mainly for all the savings bonds my kids have accumulated. Now I'm wondering what else to stuff in there. :confused3

Deed and original mortgage for the house
Originals of our wills (the only item that can be removed upon death until the estate settles)
Passports
Savings bonds
Valuable old coins

Bonds, Original Birth Certificates - any other important papr work - some jewlery that i don't wear..

All of the above plus the external back up drive for the computer.

I don't know if you are aware, but you can convert your savings bonds into electronic savings bonds at not cost. You can then manage the account on the government's website (treasurydirect.gov) this has made in much easier for me to keep track of the current value of the savings bonds and current rate of return. We have a good amount of I bonds many of which are still yielding over 5%.

Back to the original question: will, trust documents, electronic copies of our taxes for the past 10 years, digital photos of our house and contents, a backed up copy of my husband's hard drive, and some family jewelry that is never worn,

i was told NOT to put your origial will in the vault, it should be in ur homer where someone can find it..

My attorney told us that original wills are the only item that may legally be removed from a safe deposit box, in the presence of bank employees, by the executor/executrix of the estate for purposes of legal filing and to begin the settlement process. Its the one place to truly know that the original is safe and secure, because the original is what must be filed with the court.

The remaining contents of the box must remain until properly recorded and the estate goes through probate.

We have three wills. One that we keep, one for the executor if both of us die at the same time and the last at our lawyers office. The lawyer has the original.

life insurance policies

Stuff ;) We have a safe in our home so alot of my things are just kept in there . But I keep the good stuff at the bank. My good stuff seems to be just like everyone elses good stuff though .

My DD did tell me that when they opened the floor safe at our other house ( she lives there now) she found a bunch of signed baseballs that belonged to her brother . I forgot that they were there and I swore that we cleaned out that floor safe when we moved .

If you don't mind me asking, what is the cost for a safe deposit box? Just curious, as after reading the great ideas in this thread, I'm thinking of getting one! =):thumbsup2

Check with your bank. Ours had a free safe deposit box for certain accounts. Mine is the long slender one, but I just fold papers in half longways and stick them in there. It is a great place to keep passports, bonds, titles for cars and house and any other important or sentimental documents you want kept safely!

Our safe deposit box is also the long slender one and it costs us $40 a year (one time payment). We keep the following in the box (all orginials but, we have copies in the house).

Birth certificates
marriage license
baptismal certificates
savings bonds
our wills
life insurance info
misc. important papers
gold watch (belonged to my father-in-law)

I just upgraded my box to the medium size.

Right now I only have my great grandmother's silver. I plan to add my mother's expensive jewelry that she doesn't wear, the expensive jewelry of mine that I plan to sell, DVDs of pictures of DD, wills, car titles, a "death book" for both myself and my Mom that contain all our monthly bills so we don't have to search for the info while we are upset. I've got a shoe box going right now, I hope it all fits!

I had the one that was 5 inches across and super long for $10ish a year.

I upgraded to the 10" box last month, it was either $14 or $16. The silver wouldn't fit in a little box.

We keep items like the previous posters. We also keep DS Boy Scout merit badge cards. They have to be presented when (if) he goes to Eagle Scout.

Along with a lot of the others' suggestions, we keep a list of all our account numbers and phone numbers along with our job/relation contacts in case one of us passes. We update them annually.

The one thing I was always told was not to keep something that you might need to get your hands on immediately. Passports might need to be more easily accessible...depending on whether you might need to make an emergency trip out of the country. Many people do not but if you have loved ones who live in another country or a kiddo who is spending a semster studying abroad, or a spouse in the military...you get the point...then you should be able to put your hands on that passport regardless of time, day...holiday etc.

Outside of those types of things it is whatever is most valuable or paperwork that you may need all in one place. I really like the idea of having a list of monthly bills and tickets! We have Universal tix we purchased with that 99.99 deal online. I should throw those in the safety deposit box!
