What do you say when you see a baby that's not so cute?

I always say, "What a precious baby!" I believe that to be a true statement, regardless how they may look on the outside.

I generally say "Oh what a sweetie!"

My step daughter has ears that you cannot believe. Even her dad says "I can always tell which baby pictures are Erin's.. shes the one who looks like Dumbo" He says that people used to say "WOW look at those ears on the sweet little girl!" I can't imagine saying anything like that to anyone but I guess we all know some people can't keep their mouth shut.

Poor Erin.. Now she has long hair and it helps to cover them but I think at some point in her life she will get them fixed.

Once while we were visiting the in-laws, FIL went up to complete strangers in the grocery store and said "My, what an ugly baby!" He then laughed and said 'just kidding' and said he just likes to see peoples reactions. Haven't been to a store with him since.

DH does NOT have his father's sense of 'humor' thankfully.

I usually sidestep the lie by complimenting the outfit (newborns almost always have pristine, too-cute gift outfits on). If all else fails, I'll pick a particular feature to comment on - "Look at his wee precious toes!" or some such.

my mom always says "oh what a nice baby!" i just say "awww aren't you sweet?" or something along that line i could never tell the truth. no way that would be rude like wayyyyyy rude.

I remember my Mom telling me how UGLY I was when I was born! I was purple and all of my features were smashed and squished in the middle of my face! My Mom and Dad looked down at me and said.... It's alright, we'll STILL love her....

I hate when this happens! When I am saying something about the baby being cute and I know I'm clearly lying I feel like people can see right through it. I'm more inclined to say something about it's hair, personality, smile something that doesn't seem like I am lying.
Are all babies cute? Maybe in some way, shape or form. Honestly though, I have a friend who had a baby recently and it's pretty scary looking w/ very strong features. This is so horrible to admit, but when I first saw the picture....well honestly I don't even know how to describe.. "ooof"!

I'm sure I'll get reamed for this post...fire away!

I think all babies are so cute. My aunt told me to say a baby was sweet if it wasn't cute when I was a little girl. Every time someone said one of my girls was sweet, I thought they didn't think they were cute.

Now, all babies are cute to certian point, but some of them are funny looking. My niece, when she was born, had the funniest looking head I'd ever seen. I told my sister; she was mad for about 2 seconds until she said she agreed, and we both laughed. She looks fine now, and I can't wait for her to understand what I am saying when I tell her how funny she looked.

A friend of ours baby was very err un-attractive looking at about 3 months old but now that she is 9 months old she is gorgeous. Absolutely Gorgeous.
