What do you do with leftover points?

Hey all,

So let’s say you’ve banked your points and it’s reached the end of their time. You have 3 points leftover and they can’t be banked again, what do you do with them? Eat the cost? Stay another night by borrowing a few more points from Disney?

Trying to figure out the math game in number of points to own is hard with the charts changing year to year.

Unless I couldn’t travel, I would add a night to my trip by borrowing. But I would also need to think about whether that borrowing would mess up any plans for an 11 month window!

If you have 3 banked points nearing the end of UY you should be able to add a night and just use current UY points. There would be no need to borrow.

I vote add an extra day -- hard to lose points. But you don't want to borrow ahead if it will affect future trips.

You should use every single point, even if it means borrowing a little bit to get that extra night. You paid for them. Disney does not need charitable donations from us. If you can't use them but have enough points for one night (anywhere), you may be able to find a renter for even one night. But this is why I always prefer to be in banked mode. I always use all of my banked points from previous year, then a little bit from current UY and then bank the rest. Rinse and repeat. Never a dangling point.

Thanks for your replies, everyone! My preferred stay is a 36-point stay each year. If I use my June 2019 UY points in January 2020, and bank the rest of a 75-point contract to use in January 2021 then I’ll have 3 leftover. I’m a teacher with limited time off but it sounds like my best option is to stay an extra night by borrowing and make my boss deal 😂.

What are these "leftover points" of which you speak? Our first resale contract we had 128 points that were banked and had to be used by a certain date, and we only used 124 of them. Other than those 4 points, we've never had unused points.

3 isn't the worst thing in the world. I do still agree with my original sentiment that you should never let points go unused, but 3 may not be worth moving mountains for...roughly $40-60 worth of points on the rental market.

This is also what I try and do -knock on wood I have not had to borrow yet .....but as far as the 3 leftover points situation -
I would add time on to my trip and purchase the rest in the 1 time use points !

I have been fortunate in that I have not yet let any points go unused. Years ago, due to medical reasons, I shorten a trip and had a few points that were placed in a holding account and were close to expiring. I borrowed just enough points to rent out one night to someone on the rent/trade board who wanted to extend their vacation by one night. They got a bargain due to the approaching expiration date, but I did get something for them.

Since that episode, I frequently rent points well in advance to avoid getting into that scenario.

I would not endanger a future trip for 3 points.

If you dont, then borrow, or consider One Time Points too if that protects a future trip. just an option.
