So I just booked our vacation for August and we are short 1 point. So I know a point can be bought for from DVC for $15, but what we were not told before starting the booking process and after borrowing points, that CANNOT, be put back is you can only buy points 7 months in advanced, even if it is for your own DVC home lodge. So now what to do what to do. If I wait until Jan, most likely the room will be booked for the one night we need...any one have any ideas!!!

Can you hold it on a cash ressie and then at 7 months out switch to points?

No, different inventory.

OP, just book using borrowed points if you have them. If not, book one night less and hope for the best at 7 months out.

Your options:

1. Borrow the point from the next year if you can. It sounds like you cannot because you may have already borrowed them all.

2. Find someone with same home resort to transfer you a point.

3. See if you can make a cash reservation for the one night through DVC. Then at 7 months out see if you can get the night with points and buying the one and, if so, cancel that cash reservation.

4. Buy a 25 point add-on.

5. Just wait and hope the night is available at 7 months. Make sure you call exactly 7 months out. Note, if that night is a Fri or Sat your chances of getting it are higher than other nights and August is usually a time when things are available at 7 months out except possibly for for GV's, AKV concierge, BWV standard or boardwalk view, BLT MK and standard view and Treehouse Villas..

If I couldn't borrow and was outside the 7 month window to buy that one point from Disney, I'd either:

1- Switch out the first night of the trip to a room that uses less points;
2- Shorten my trip by a day (hopefully add on at 7 months when I can buy that $15 point)
3- Rent a significant sum of bankable points (to bank all but 1!) from another owner at my home resort. They'll get used ;)

I like the third option the best :goodvibes

If you really don't want to borrow, try the cash ressie. I've done numerous times. You book your villa on cash (with the 25% DVC discount) to hold it, and yes while points are a different inventory, if the villa is not available for those points at the 7 month mark you are still well within the cash cancellation policy if you don't want to pay for it.

As I said, it's worked for me more than a few times. Good luck

Unless you're booking AKV concierge, BLT Standard or some other excessively small room category, I doubt you will have trouble picking up the last night at 7 months for a mid-August trip.

I agree! In the meantime, I also think if you look around on the rent trade board, you might find someone with a couple of "extra" points who could help you out. A couple of years ago I had 3 lone banked AKV points that would expire if not used. I was able to help out someone who needed just one point to finish out a reservation like that. I didn't charge for it....I just gave them the point. As it later turned out, I could have used it myself when I decided to add a night, but it was no big deal to borrow from my next use year for it.

It sounds to me like the OP does not have any more points they can borrow.

I think you are going to probably have to wait till you can buy one from Disney at 7 months.

I personally would not use my one transfer per year to transfer one point to someone else.

I agree with Tim, as long as you are not booking the options he listed, and you call the first day at 7 months, I don't think you wil have any problems getting the last day.

I was under the impression that as long as you aren't transferring points in and out, you can transfer multiple times a year. OTherwise, i don't understand some of the rent/transfer points threads on that forum....many sound like they have about 150 pts to start and then later they'll say they ahve 20 left or something and are still trying to ditch them...am I off base? (Still new to all this!)

We are in the same position for our April trip. We specifically made sure that we did not reserve the weekend night, in hopes that it will be there in April. If not, we'll stay at SSR, or come home one night early.

Not sure of your understanding but a member is allowed only one transfer per use year, either in or out but not both. However, you can always make a reservation in another's name using your own points and that is not a "transfer" of points subject to that one transfer rule. Those who have points to rent and do so for some and then say they still have some left are in the category of persons who rented by using their own points to make a reservation in someone else's name.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I am going to talk over with my hubby buying one night with the 25% DVC discount to try and "reserve" that night until we can try and book at the 7 month mark. If that doesn't work out we will just wait and hope to get the room booked in Jan. Hopefully we will get it, if not we will just miss one day at our favorite place!!!:thumbsup2

If you have the points to borrow, this is the best and easiest, no other options should be considered. Otherwise it's rent from another member, do cash reservations and link them or wait until the 7 mo window. A number of options can be combined to give you choices.
