What do you always forget to bring?

I used to be good at this. I did 10 days at WDW every year for over a decade, then in 2019 I had a major surgery and next year we all know what happened, so my last trip was 2018. I'll be going this year in late May and I'm sitting here making lists for everything, and lists of my lists. I don't remember what stuff I'm going to end up forgetting!

For reference, I'm 40 years old and severely disabled with systemic RA. I have extreme balance and stamina issues; I can slowly hobble across a small-ish room using my cane, I can make it from the bed to the bathroom at the hotel, but I have a personal scooter for outside the room. I can't get on most rides, so I spend my time lazily wandering the parks and looking at things, and eating. A lot of eating. I'll be alone for 5 days and with a friend for 6.

What do you forget to bring, or what do you wish you had brought, or would have brought if you'd had space? I'm bringing 2 large packed suitcases and it's just me for 10 days, since I prefer to overpack. It doesn't hurt anything and packing light inevitably leads to paying out the rear onsite for bits and bobs. I'd rather bring it and not need it. Over the years I did learn to bring scissors for a dozen different reasons, and duct tape to reinforce the scooter's cup-holders and basket (it's an old scooter, lol). I seem to recall there was a coat hanger issue a couple of times, too, and I used to have a wedge door stop that stayed in the frame since I can't bend over to pick it back up when I'm on my own.

What would you bring that I'm probably going to forget?

- If you use a national chain pharmacy (CVS or Walgreen's) for your medication, make sure you have their app in your smartphone, and have made your account already prior to the trip. That way, if your doctor's office has to call something in for you while you are in Orlando, you will be prepared.

- I always take at least 3 extra days worth of medicine with me. Never have needed it, but it's a superstition now! LOL

- Extra zip-lock bags of different sizes. They can keep things dry, they can keep things organized. They can hold little things that might get lost in hotel drawers, they can hold the rest of a snack you want to eat later. Just so handy!

- Blue painters tape: you can use it in so many ways, and it won't harm 98% of the surfaces you stick it to. It's easy to tear by hand (I have RA too, so I know :-) ) and can be used to hold curtains closed, tape cupholders to ECVs 😉 hold things closed/open... very handy, and will even stick to most fabrics in a pinch! Bonus extra: Blue painter's tape can be "flat packed" (meaning that you unroll a strip, and then "re-roll" it, only without the big cardboard ring in the center... or you can Google "how to flat pack tape" to see YouTube videos of another equally easy way to fold tape for travel). You can take a LOT of tape with you, without taking up a lot of space this way. I prefer the wider width tape, only because you can always make it narrower, but it's dang near impossible to make it wider without some real magic!!!

- Clean, brightly colored cotton bandanas. I use the heck out of these on every trip. Tie your hair back/up. Run one through the handles of your shopping bags to make a single, soft fabric handle. Hold a sweaty cold cup on hot days, (and then have a cool, damp cloth for the back of your neck) or hold a hot/warm cup on cool nights (and have a cozy makeshift scarf to keep the back of your neck warm!) Tie one somewhere on your ECV to help it stand out in the crowd; that way you can tell the CM who is helping you find your ECV after a ride/attraction that it's the one with the lime green bandana tied to the front basket! There are *dozens* of uses for these, and I try to take a clean one (packed in it's own little zip-lock bag to keep it clean in my purse) for every day of the trip! (Or every day of your laundry cycle)

- Door stop. Full stop, do not travel without it. Go here, buy one.

- Reusable plastic/metal/etc. straws. Especially if you want/need a straw when at AK.

- Consider this folding walker (remember that the airline will let you bring this for free - no extra bag fees - because it is a medical mobility device) for use in the hotel room. It folds to the size of an umbrella stroller, and at my family's insistence, I now have one for travel, and I have to say... I like having that extra stability when I am away from home.

- This stuff. It packs flat, is machine washable, and I take a 30" length of it to put on the floor of the roll-in shower, and another 30" length to put on the floor *outside* the roll-in shower for safety. Buy the 24" width!

- When you need more than blue painter's tape, use Velcro One Wrap. I always travel with this, and I am always glad I have some with me! We have used it to hang things off of other things, to hold things closed that don't want to, to hold things open that ought to... In all seriousness, I use it to secure my folding cane to my personal mobility device so it doesn't get lost. I use it to hold my cupholder on my device so that I can mount it where it's handy for me. I use it (cut in small strips) to hold bike lights on my device for after dark at WDW. (always mount them as low as you can, so they don't blind the little ones who are stuck down at street level in their strollers!) There are lots of things you will find this useful for!

- Laundry detergent pods (I pack these in a single row, inside zip lock bags, then slide them single file down inside an empty paper towel tube, and tuck them along the side of the suitcase to help prevent squishiness). I always pack at least one more load of pods than I plan on using; that way if there is a laundry emergency, I'm good... and if I don't need them, I leave them in the laundry room for someone who might.

- Clothes pins: so that I can hang garments to dry properly on the clothes line in the bathroom.

- At least one extra pair of comfy shoes. WDW is not a fashion show, so bring at least one extra pair of comfy shoes, because even if you won't be walking, your feet will thank you for changing shoes at least once per day. Personally, I always bring my favorite pair of Crocs when we go to Disney, because if it rains, they will dry out quickly, and you can wear them around the pool, laundry area, etc. and no one will mind. You can even wash them in the Parks in a bathroom sink if they get too dirty/sweaty, and they can be dried quickly and completely with a paper towel if need be.

- Chargers for every electronic device you bring.

- A multi-outlet extension cord or power strip if you have a lot of stuff to charge.

- Packing Cubes. I don't leave home without them now. I used to think it was a bunch of nonsense, and then I tried them on one trip, and WOW was I amazed! Most of my clothes are cotton leggings and cotton shirts, so they can be rolled up, and packed tightly anyway - and the packing cubes not only hold more "stuff", but I am much more organized. I like the smaller cubes - I have one for each day of my trip, and I can preplan outfits that way. On longer trips where we will be doing laundry (so less clothes = more room for souvenirs!) I don't try to make cubes for each day, but rather for each type of clothes. I hang my clothes as soon as I am in the room to help release any wrinkles... and again - it's WDW, it's not a fashion show, so I don't worry too much if something is a little wrinkled from the suitcase. (patterns hide wrinkles better than solid colors, FYI!)

I'm weird, so years ago, I started this goofy thing I do where I made a 3 x 5 card with the name of each thing I wanted to take, and I store those in my suitcase. (Think of things like toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) Then, as I packed, I took the stack of cards, and replaced each card with the item I wanted to pack. Seems silly, but it works for me. When I get home, I take the stack, and edit it with things I found I didn't need, and add new cards for things I wanted to pack for the next trip. Our daughter does the same thing; she has stacks for Disney trips, and business trips, and "other" trips!

Most of this stuff will fit inside a pair of shoes in your suitcase, or will fold flat to go under your clothes. LOL I'm weird - you may not want or need near all of it, but... you asked! 😆🤣😆

OMG...thank you for sharing! I've lately gotten so tired of checking and rechecking my packing list, and this may be just the thing to help. I actually have a stack of cards on a ring that I haven't used, and may just try it out this evening. :dogdance:

I mean, I'm the one who packs duct tape and little single-use tubes of superglue, so "weird" is just a state of mind! I use it mostly on the scooter for the stuff you use Velcro for. I usually need a tighter hold than a strip of velcro will give me. The only cupholders available for my model of scooter are the kind that slide onto the armrests, which is dumb because it means you can't pull the armrests up, and you can't get in or out of the scooter when they're down. It's the worst possible place to keep a cup of liquid.

So, I bought a cupholder that's just a round ring that can clip onto a metal bar -- but because it wasn't made specifically for my scooter, it doesn't really fit on there securely. The scooter doesn't have any horizontal bars to clip something on there, it's all angled. It clips and then hangs at an odd angle that wouldn't be suitable to keep an open container. So I stuck it on as best I could and then I braided some dental floss and tied the other side of the cupholder ring to the scooter's basket to force it flat. Superglued it into place, duct taped over the glue. There might be more layers of braided floss in there too, that cupholder has been stuck on for about a decade and I reinforce it a little bit every year. At this point you could feed the entire scooter into an industrial crusher and that cupholder would stay in place.

Normally I just hang my backpack over the back of the seat and slide my cane in between the pack and the seat and it stays in place. This year I found a cane holder online so I'll be trying that out, but the manufacturer seems to believe I have the upper body strength to force the cane into a tight "grip" slot and then yank it out again, which is hilarious. I can barely dress myself.

Also, now I really want to bring cool little bandannas with me even though I wouldn't be able to use them for the stuff you do. My scooter's the one with the gigantic rainbow golf umbrella! I can't tie my hair back; I can't even reach up far enough to touch the top of my head, forget the back.

And, I can't wrap my hands around a cup at all. I bring my own mugs with me, the older resort refillable mugs from the days when they had handles. They can't be reactivated anymore for use with the drink machines, but I can just buy a new mug and use that to get the drink, then lift it by awkwardly pinching the rim and pour the contents into a mug I can actually pick up. I've gotten side-eye before for doing this, but that's their fault for assuming everyone can use a wide, heavy mug with no handle on it. I'm happy to pay whatever it costs, I just cannot physically pick up the new mug to drink from it, it has to be poured into an old one with a handle.

Painter's tape is a great idea, I'll bring that. I used to use it to tape shut all my bath and cosmetics products, but after a few trips I realized I was spending an hour taping and untaping every time and it wasn't worth it -- but as you said, there are plenty of other things it comes in handy for when duct tape is too permanent. Also need to look into that shelf liner for the bathroom floor. This is the first trip I didn't request a roll-in shower; since I need a shower chair anyway, it's easier to just keep the chair in the tub, sit down, and swing my legs over while seated. The roll-in shower is nice but it means the ENTIRE BATHROOM FLOOR gets soaking wet since there is no lip and the slope isn't slope-y enough, and walking on the wet floor is incredibly dangerous for me even with a cane. My balance is atrocious, my ankles don't bend and I need special shoes to even stand up.

I may try the index card thing! Normally I just make a set of categorized packing lists, and it's more or less the same lists every year. I cross stuff out as it goes into the suitcase. The cards would be better if I re-used them every year, but to be honest, I don't know if I'm gonna keep going every year like I used to. The costs have doubled, the hotel alone is literally more than twice what I usually pay. Pop Century for 10 days used to be around $1200 - $1500. Now it's $2600. I had to pay for accessible transportation to and from the airport for two people on separate days because ME is gone. Ticket prices have skyrocketed because of the specific price for specific day thing. The theme park reservation system means I might miss out on my favorite things because I can't guarantee how I'll be feeling on any given day, so I'll need to upgrade to park hoppers, which I never needed before since I can only handle a few hours of park every day. Now I need to pay for hoppers just to be sure of getting into the park I want at all.

I never ever thought I'd say it, but I don't know if I can come back every year because I can't afford it anymore. I'm on disability and I rarely leave the house or indulge in anything because I save my pennies for this one single trip once a year. It's the only time I get to feel independent at all, since I know I'm safe to travel to Disney alone. Now with all the price increases, saving up for a full year isn't enough money to pay for a trip. The hotel being more than double was a huge shock.

I get it. Our family has been suffering sticker shock as well. It seems like that with the 50th Celebration came LOTS of higher prices, and just wait till you get in the Parks - *everything* costs more now.

We are seriously considering staying off-site this next time. Even with car rental, and parking fees, it will be *so* much cheaper. I am fortunate that in my personal mobility "fleet", I have my TravelScoot that will fold down so compactly that I can rent almost any vehicle (that I can get in and out of with my poor old knees)

Having said that, there are benefits that you can't really beat staying on-site; we don't really go anywhere outside of Disney when we are in Orlando, so the internal Disney transportation is wonderful for us. And, we are those people who love Disney Springs, and spend a *lot* of time down there every trip; it's wonderful to just be able to climb on a bus or boat at the end of the evening, and let someone else do the driving!

Historically, Disney does not drop prices; I fear that the $100/night prices we once saw at POP and the other Values is long gone, never to return. Like many others, I am not a fan of the Parks Reservation System; I believe that if you have a Disney Resort Hotel reservation that should cover your Parks reservation for any Park you want to go to that day, and Park Hoppers should be for folks who stay offsite as well; it should be included in that Resort Hotel reservation. Resort Hotel reservations need to be waaaaay more competitive; even accounting for the transportation system, there are far fewer "perks" now, especially at the Value and Mod level, so it's time for a price check on those hotel rates, Disney! (Let me know when you are ready for me to be The Queen Of The World - I have lots of other great ideas, like Dole Whip EVERYWHERE! 🤣 )

I know you probably have been there already, but there is a great budget board here on the DIS that might be able to help you plan for future trips.

Unfortunately I have no choice to stay offsite, as I can't drive. It's why Disney is about the only place I can go for a vacation on my own, and why I go every year. Not only can I not just rent a car, I can't get in and out of a regular car either, so Uber's not really an option. I've never had to worry about any of that at Disney. I can take my scooter right onto the bus and go anywhere on the property without anyone's assistance. 355 days a year of being squashed under my parents' thumbs every moment of every day at 40 yrs old, and 10 days of freedom, that's all I get.

I've peeked in at the budget board on occasion, but most of the tips are stuff that isn't possible for me for various disability or logistical reasons. The rest boils down to "don't eat on property, don't do events or tours, don't buy anything" and when I already can't go on 95% of the rides, there's not much left to do besides wandering around the parks looking at stuff I can't afford.

Ugh, that's depressing. I DO have the money this year, so I'll focus on that for now! Also, I just found out tonight that the refillable mugs have HANDLES again!!! I can't even tell you how exciting that is lol. There were several years where the mugs had no handle and I'd be forced to buy one anyway and then get yelled at by CMs for pouring my legitimately purchased and paid-for drink into a mug I could physically hold. I don't do well at confrontations, and it kept happening, all because of the stupid mug with no handle on it. Whose dumb idea was that. At least they did realize it was dumb and corrected it.
