What could I do with a Tourism Management degree at Disney?

I am very interested in attending Rosen College of Hospitality Management at UCF. I have also posted before about how I want to do at least one CP and a PI in Operations Management. Will a degree in this field give me a leg up as far as the PI and/or getting a management position upon graduation? I plan on working part time throughout the school year, and then working full time during the summer. I want to do at least one CP, giving me the required qualifications to do the Operations Management PI.

So, basically, will a degree in this field from a place so close to Disney give me a leg up? And is there anything else that I might be better suited for at Disney?

Thanks!

I can't answer exactly but my daughter is a CP now and has visited Rosen twice and really hopes to go there beginning next fall or spring -- depends on a few things -- anyway she has met several CMs who are also going to Rosen. Some of the jobs do require degrees so it certainly isn't a bad choice.

Have you been to visit Rosen?

Not yet, but I have been to their website and it looks like a great school. Not to mention the fact that it seems beautiful.

I'm wondering what some of the positions that require a degree would be.

The school is absolutely beautiful and the classrooms are state of the art. There is a thread a few months old with some of your same questions and talk about the school -- you might want to see if you can find that.

I think the thread title actually has Rosen in it -- so try and find it.

If you got the degree and then went to work for Disney it won't do much. Most of my managers don't even have a degree. It is all about experience.

It is what you make of your time while at the school. I know many people who been working at Disney part time during the entire time at the school and hope to do a PI during their last year since a lot of times PIs turn into a full time job.

Sounds like with operations you would want to go for the hospitality theme park track degree. The question is do you want to work for Disney and you are looking at possible careers you could have with Disney or are you a theme park lover looking to make a career out of it? I ask because many Rosen people on the theme park track do the internships at Sea World and Universal. You probably could do better for yourself by going to UCF instead of doing a college program.

I found that thread and it was very useful. Thanks!

I'm not sure I really understand what you are saying, but I'm a Disney lover who wants to make a career out of working for Disney. If I attend Rosen I am going to do Hospitality Management with the Theme Park Track.

The only reason I was going to do a CP was so that I had the qualifications to do the Operations Management PI. It is a requirement for that particular one to do a CP prior. I'm not sure what you mean by attending UCF since that is what Rosen is, just a division of UCF.

I would really like to do something that would put my degree to use - or do a job at Disney that required a degree like I have, instead of just being based on experience. Are there even jobs at WDW that require this type of degree?

Thanks for your help Andy!

Yeah, I know some people who did the WDWCP with me back in 2005 & they did a PI a couple of months ago & now they have full-time jobs with Disney. Ones in labor management (or something like that) & the other is with DU. (Disney University) I also know some ppl who just moved down there after the WDWCP, which seemed to be quite popular my time. haha.

So really, I guess it just depends. Although Im thinking about doing kind of the same thing as you are... although I'll be doing it up here in NC. Really I just want to go back again, prolly for a PI. I definitely am going Seasonal this time though, bc I regret not doing it last time. So yeah, I was also wondering what that degree would do for someone, Im glad you asked. :)

Thanks! I am hoping Andy will come back and respond; he really is a wealth of knowledge.

Anyone? I'm mainly looking for jobs at Disney that would require a Hospitality/Hospitality Management degree.

I guess it could be in the Orlando area as well.

In all honesty any job in Orlando could use a Tourism degree considering it is the top destination in the world. I have my degree in Hotel Management and am now applying for a Management Internship with Disney. You can do so much with this degree.

Wow good luck! I'd love to have a degree like that.
