My sister's family and my family are taking my parents there for their 40th wedding anniversary next year instead of throwing a party. We already rented a 4 bedroom condo we're excited about. We picked this beach b/c it literally is exactly in the middle of upstate NY where I live and South Va., where my parents and sister live - so we all have a six hour drive. I would love to hear recommendations about restaurants - including those seafood shacks that always seem to make the best food and one nice restaurant for the celebratory meal; a good grocery store; what is considered the "food" of the area; any other activities that are fun there; any good specials or coupons; and any other recommendations you can make for there. Thanks, I can't wait to hear all about it!

My mother and her boyfriend have a house there. We took our kids there last summer and we really enjoyed it. First they have every store you could possibly imagine there. All your normal chain stores and restaurants plus tons of outlet shopping and no tax on clothing!!! The beach is very nice with a boardwalk that has a ton of shops, food, candy shop, ice cream you name it. There are also a ton of rides for the kids. They have carnival type games too. My kids spent hours on those rides!LOL There are a lot of families down there in the summer and the beach itself is nice. I will ask my mom about restaurant recommendations and get back to you. When we went to eat we stuck to the chain places cause we have picky kids. Oh, when we were on the boardwalk we did have the best french fries! There was a place that made them fresh and we gobbled them up in no time!:rotfl: What I liked about it was that the prices were really good, especially for the kiddie rides. We are use to going to Cape May, which btw is only a ferry ride away, but we liked Rehoboth beach very much. I would take a day trip to Cape May if you could. I will post more info for you once I talk to my mom.

Ok, I've been there almost every summer since i was 5 or 6yo. My parents love it so much they retired there. I'm going up again next weekend, but for part of that i will be in Philly for a wedding.

Anyhow, the beach is FREE. Don't need any beach tags, stupid permits. Just rent beach umbrellas/chairs if you don't have them. Highway 1(the main highway you'll be traveling to head into town as we call it) has a couple of waterparks, and go cart courses. Also, there is a minigolf course that is very challenging. Most expensive waterpark is Jungle Jims, they just built a ton of new slides a couple of yrs ago. The other 1 is not as expensive, can't remember the name offhand. Spent a lot of teens yrs at that though. That has really quick slides.

Most chain restaurants are on Highway 1. In town you have Grottos and Nicola's pizza places. Both serve good food, but Nicolla's is fabulous. Grotto's is a small chain but mostly to the nearby beaches, you won't find it in NY. Nicolla's is expanding and should have a 2nd resaurant open next season, which is great cause in the summer the wait is HOURs long for supper, yet worth the wait. Was up a couple of weeks weeks ago and saw the newspaper article.

The boards are nice with lots of cute little shops, requisite boardwalk fries etc. and there's just the 1 rooftop minigolf place now. Used to be 2 or 3 but the others died out. But the rooftop golf is just 3:50pp. Great price, haven't played yet this yr, but its a fun course.

I could concievably fill up this entire thread 4 you with info. So instead since I am headed up next week would you like to pick up brochures or get real estate rental listings for you?

here have a website if you haven't already found it.

Lots of good info. I confess to not knowing much about the real estate agencies, but the Jack Lingo realty office is pretty much the oldest in town and has been around for decades. My parents had a modular home built when they retired so all they needed was a lot to build on. Can't remember who they used.

Rehoboth is less than 30 minutes from our house...except in the summer when the tourists come :)

We LOVE it there and try to go often in the summer.

You have to eat at Nicola's and Grotto's, Dolle's is where you need to get your taffy, Fisher's is THE place for caramel popcorn, Thrasher's is the best for fresh french fries, Candy Kitchen is the place to go for candy, fudge, etc.

For the kids, you have to take them to Funland for the rides. The tickets are fairly cheap, they used to be about .25 each, but I'm sure they've gone up at this point. There are rides for the little kids AND the big kids, as well as games for all.

Candy Kitchen is everywhere, and their fudge is ok. You can get better fudge at the Sea Shell shop on Rehoboth ave or Highway 1. Haven't had Dolle's fudge in awhile either but I think hers is better too.

I just love going up to visit my parents in the summer and all yr round there. Its got a lot of great character.

.....All your normal chain stores and restaurants plus tons of outlet shopping and no tax on clothing!!!.....

Actually, Delaware doesn't have a sales tax on anything. Our malls and stores are full of out of state shoppers, especially during the holidays.

Shhhhhhhhhh....the secret will get out even more! :lmao:

Just kidding!!

I don't need rental listings as we already have a place; however, I would LOVE to get pamphlets and brochures b/c we want to put a package/present to my parents re this and that information would be INCREDIBLE to add. Thank you so much!

We live about 3 hours away and try to go every summer. We flip/flop between Rehobeth and Bethany. I have to second the person who said Fisher's caramel popcorn. OMG- that stuff is divine. I was craving it so bad last summer after our trip that I took a sick day on a Friday and DD and I drove down just to get that popcorn! We did stay for a few hours on the boardwalk though- and I ended up bringing back 10 buckets of the popcorn for co-workers. Also Thrashers has the best french fries.

We always stop at Kohr Bros. (on the main drag, about 10 feet from the boardwalk) for yummy frozen custard. We stop at least twice a day while we are there for orange vanilla swirl cones.

Our favorite resturant by far is The Pig + Fish. They have happy hour specials which include half-price apps like baked oysters and their food is really good. Service has been outstanding every time we have gone and they have the BEST Bourbon Bread and Butter Pudding I have ever tasted in my life! Put's the bread pudding at Disney World to shame- even the one at Ohana. Last trip we were there they added the "Steakhouse Sunday" that offers prime rib, ny's, tenderloins, all for like under 20 bucks with a salad and a drink, wine or beer. Can't beat that!

ACK!! Too many people know about Rehoboth!!! Ssssshhhh it's gonna get even more crowded on the weekends!!! :lmao:

Seriously though, there is just so much! I could write all day. You are less than an hour of Ocean City, MD for a day trip if you need more excitement, there are go-karts and water slides out on Rt. 1, the outlets are there, tons of small little stores and restaurants on the streets of town, the Avenue, there is the boardwalk, the beach itself, mini-golf on Rt 1...<sigh> I love Rehoboth. :)

There is a pretty good outlet center in Rehoboth. Google it for more info.

thanks all for your help?

anymore must do's?

and what is the fave grocery store there? the budgeteer I am, I want to check out their deals before we go so I can figure out budget meals!

Someone mentioned it in passing, but you should try to plan a day trip on the Cape May Lewes Ferry which will take you over to Cape May, N.J. which is a very pretty, quaint victorian town.
I agree that the boardwalk ride prices and mini-golf prices are better in Rehobeth than anywhere else I've been. We do the Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics Delaware the first weekend in February in Rehobeth, so this particular town/beach is very special to our family. I am always impressed with how family-friendly it is and how clean the beach has always been.
You will have a wonderful time. I am so glad you have this to look forward to and to plan!

NP. I can pick some up for you while I'm there and mail em probably about middle of next week. Just Pm me with your address and we're all set. :thumbsup2

another question - anyone know a wedding cake maker there? i thought it would be cool to have a recreation of their wedding cake made.

My parents are in OC MD right down the road a bit.
We love Rehobeth. There are so many places to shop.,(Outlets are there as well as some really nice shops) If you have children the board walk is really reasonable for rides. Grotto's pizza is really good. There are super markets right on 13. My brother loves the waterpark on 13 can't remember the name. Can't really help you with Resturants. But there is the ferry into Cape May NJ.Which is fun and over on that side there is the Cape may zoo (free to get in) As well as some really great shops in Cape May.

Have a great time!!!!!!

It's not 13, it's Rt1. Rt 13 is on the other side of the state. :) The Cape May/Lewes ferry is in Lewes. :)

I second what everyone has said. I will ride down for the day and our "musts" are Grotto's, Thrashers, and Moose Tracks ice cream. If you like donuts, on Route 1, right past the exit for Rehobeth, on the right is a place called The Fractured Prune, donuts are hot and put together when you order them. Fabulous. Have a great time!!!

I also recommend Jungle Jim's. We had seasons passes last year and it never got boring. Most of the things to do in Rehoboth are right around the boardwalk area. Thrashers Fries and Fishers popcorn are definietly a must. Candy Kitchen in my opinion is terrible. For fudge and candy go to Dolly's. My DH always gets fish and chips from GoFish!. I love Grotto pizza. You maybe disapointed with that coming from NY tho. Everyone knows there is nothing like a good NY pizza pie. If you are willing to drive about 30 minutes I would recommend a day trip to Ocean City MD or maybe Frontiertown (also in MD) for the kids. Shell We golf @ the Sea Shell Shop (rt 13) is a fun mini golf coarse. The other waterpark that was mentioned I believe is Midway. I have never been to the waterpark there but can recommend their go karts and mini golf also. If you PM me I can mail you some pamphlets. We are only about 30minutes away also. DS is sick today, but as soon as he is better we will be on are way down to the beach. :)
