Is it a safe area to stay? What hotel would you recommend? Holiday inn, Days inn, Ramada type hotels. Nothing that cost tons of $$$$$ just something clean, comfortable and a safe area. Thank you for any and all info.

Do NOT stay at the Quality Inn..it's in a rough area and its a dump. We stayed there once on a trip back to Ohio and DH was ready to kill me when he realized where we were staying...:rotfl:

Honestly I wouldn['t stay anywhere in Hammond now. Dh travels alot and says its just a rough town period.

Which way are you heading? I would go closer to Chicago (Schaumberg, Hoffman Estates area on the west side3 of downtown-) or more into Indiana . There are some better areas about 15-30 min past Hammond that I would feel more comfortable in (LaPorte/South Bend).

Depending on what your other options are, I would have to guess that Hammond / Gary would have to be near the bottom of the list.

I agree that LaPotre / SB or perhaps Michigan City would be better (safer) choices.

Thank you JME and ICF. We are planning on going to a concert at the casino this summer. We have never been to Hammond area, according to google maps it is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from us so we were planning on staying the night. I think we will look in the area of In/Mi line for a place to stay.
If we go i'm now getting scared to go to that area.

I work pretty close to Hammond. If the casino has a hotel, it should be fine. Don't spend the time/money going into Illinois. The hotels on US 30 in Schererville and Merrillville are fine (Radisson, HE express). I've heard that the ones on US41 in Highland are clean and safe. Personally, I would avoid East Chicago and Whiting. Going south a bit the towns seem to have newer shopping and I would assume newer hotels.

I'm from the area. The hotels on US 30 near I65 are fine ( Radisson, Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn) .

Since you are going to the casino, you could also stay at the Hampton Inn on Calumet Ave in Munster. It's not far from the expressway and it's a nice area.

I'm originally from that area too. I agree with everyone else I'd skip it because there are other better options not far away.

I'll echo everyone else, hotels at the intersection at RT30/Rt41 in Schereville Indiana are fine. The Hampton Inn on Calumet that Marie mentioned is also a nice hotel in a good area.

The things by I-65 and RT 41 are also nice but a bit out of your way.

I'd stay away from anything right off of I-94 unless you go east to LaPorte or Michigan City (Indiana Dunes area.) I know my dad has stayed at a hotel in Beverly Shores a few times. Ogden Dunes too.
