What are you afraid of? Unreasonable fears

One of my biggest fears is passing an 18 wheeler on the interstate.

This is something that has just developed over the last couple of years and it seems to be getting worse. When I get alongside them I feel like they are coming over into my lane. If I'm in the passenger seat and DH is driving I will actually hold my breath (like that's going to help if it hits us)until he gets clear of it.

Mashed potatos. I couldn't gag them down if you paid me. I feel like I'm going to suffocate when they are in my mouth.

I have several other terrible fears, but they are rational and related to topics that have been banned from these forums, so I won't say anything about them.

House fires.

I link it back to the time when I was about 6 and watched an episode of Rescue 911 about a baby trapped in her burning bedroom, the fire started by a cord under a rug that god walked on and rubbed down to wires and sparked the fire. I remember asking my mom if there were cords under our carpet. I am still weird about cords. And now that I am adult, the devastation of a house fire is added to the fear I remember as a child.

I can *almost* watch a house burning, like on a TV show or news footage, but show me a BURNT house, and I HAVE to turn away. To see one in real life, and my heart races and I get nervous. To SMELL one, OMG...

I used to be afraid of driving in front of, behind or next to big trucks, until I had a lot more experience driving, now I'm ok.

I also used to be afraid of driving over bridges, not so much anymore.

I now have a fear of what to do with all of the millions of dollars I'd win if only I'd play the lottery. :goodvibes

Bugs, don't like them on me.:crazy2:

space. Maybe I listened to Major Tom too much growing up but just the thought of being there and not being able to return home just gives me the willies.

Bees/wasps
Heights
Long and/or high bridges (driving to OC was fun...NOT!)

I've always had these phobias but the older I get the worse they get.

DD is afraid of driving past 18-wheelers too. She doens't cringe anymore but I can still tell that she's uncomfortable.

I can't watch someone underwater with their mouth open or someone in a movie drowning, it bothers me so much even though I haven't had a bad experience with it.

I also have a fear of open heights, afraid I will accidently fall, be pushed or the wind will knock me over the side. (No, I'm not that light.)

Spiders - I'm deeply, horrifically terrified

Free standing objects in my bedroom when I'm about to go to sleep. I saw, very briefly, a scene in a horror movie when I was 12 where a dressing dummy starts walking towards a girl lying in bed and falls on her. It terrified me to the point where I still have to have any chairs up against a table or the wall and the door has to be either all the way open or all the way closed. Ridiculous I know, but it isn't as bad as it used to be.

I have a few normal fears (snakes, heights, flying), but I do have an irrational fear of basements. I got good and scared by the original Amityville Horror movie and never got over it! I'm to the point with my own basement where I'll go down, but only if my dog goes first. :lmao: We have a motion sensor light down there and I make her go down to trip the light for me. She's so smart that if she doesn't want to go down with me, she'll trip the light and come right back up the steps! Good doggy. :goodvibes

I believe I have the most irrational fear.

I am afraid to dive into water.

I am a great swimmer. I can jump into water from a decent height without issue. But, ask me to put my arms up in a dive position and spring myself into water headfirst even from just the edge of a pool? Ain't gonna happen.

Being injected at the dentist. I had a bad experience when I was younger. I had a small filling a few years back and had to man up then!

Driving on the PA Turnpike. Everytime I drive on it I swear there is construction and they have Jersey barriers up. Those barriers make me feel claustrophobic and don't even get me near an 18 wheeler, I turn while knuckled and tense up....

I hate passing 18-wheelers, too, but it's from a bad experience where one actually did decide to change lanes while I was right next to him! :sad2: Busses, too. I always zoom past as fast as I can so I'm not next to them long. ;)

Me too! DH just takes his sweet time and I will be sitting there pushing my foot through the floorboard trying to make it go faster & holding my breath.

Fire - I went through a couple of big fires when I was a teenager. No houses burnt and no one was hurt, but my parents' property had some major damage.
Underwater Tunnels
Lizards

Driving into a large city...just seeing the tall buildings in the distance gives me the willies. Also, driving across bridges with trusses...I can do it if I have to, but I'd rather not. Bridges that aren't enclosed by anything are fine, but with trusses, I feel like I'm in a cage. If the bridge is too tall or too long, I just can't do it. We have to look for another route.

Clowns

I cant be in the same room as one...

Anesthesia!!! Even light conscious sedation.

I have no idea why I have such a horror of it either. No one in my family has bad stories to tell....completely irrational....and really quite inconvenient too!!

I don't know what I will do if I have to have surgery some day.

I just thought of another one that freaks me out...

Those wind turbines... the white ones you see in fields. OMG, freak me out!
