What are you afraid of? Unreasonable fears

Matches, especially the small ones! What makes this especially strange is I was a volunteer forefighter for over 40 years and never had a problem going into countless burning buildings. It's not the fire, but the thought of having to strike a match that I don't like.

One of my biggest fears is passing an 18 wheeler on the interstate.

This is something that has just developed over the last couple of years and it seems to be getting worse. When I get alongside them I feel like they are coming over into my lane. If I'm in the passenger seat and DH is driving I will actually hold my breath (like that's going to help if it hits us)until he gets clear of it.

Dont feel bad....I do the same thing! Except I also close my eyes really tight and scrunch up my shoulders (of course, not while I'm the one driving!) until we pass. Dont ask me how I think that will help, but I do it!

i'm also terrified of horseshoe crabs. not all crabs (i own 3 hermit crabs that i love deeply) just horseshoe crabs.

oh, and jellyfish. i'm afraid of stepping on a jelly fish.

once i was in the ocean, and i stepped on a plastic bag (like a walmart shopping bag) and i freaked out so bad i wouldn't get back in the ocean. i thought it was a jelly fish.

I'm with you on the jellyfish...but just because I have a deathly allergic reaction. I stepped on one at the beach when I was about 4 years old and had to be rushed to the ER because my whole body erupted in hives and my throat was swelling shut!!! I love the beach, but not those little boogers!!!

Hello, my twin!!! I hate horseshoe crabs. I blame it on the movie The Wrath of Khan. Ricardo Montalban puts those things in the guy's ears. Every time I see a horseshoe crab I expect it to scurry up and try to suck out my brain. Never mind that they're not the scurrying type....



Also, zombies. This is a really serious fear for me. There's something about the mindless, non-stop nature of a zombie attack. I actually have zombie nightmares. An online friend sent me pictures from an event she participated in; a 5K race where everyone was dressed and made up like zombies. I couldn't even look at it. I can't watch previews for zombie movies either.

The more recent zombie movies really tick me off because they show zombies as being all quick and clever. What the heck? Zombies would be slow, people. They would be fighting rigor mortis so leaping and running and climbing would be out of the question. I feel very strongly about this.

I basically live landlocked in the middle of North America--no oceans anywhere near me but am terrified that I will be attacked/killed by a shark.
Won't even go into a lake for fear the Jaws music will play and then I'll be a goner.....

People vomiting. I know it's kinda silly since it's just a natural function of the body to get toxins out and I have a degree in biology, so I've seen plenty of gross stuff, but I'm irrationally scared of people throwing up. I have been since I was little. Anytime someone in my family got sick, I'd lock myself in my room, stuff a shirt under the door gap, and stick a pillow over my head so I couldn't hear it. Even now, if I know someone is sick on a plane or ride, I get really anxious.
I suppose the biggest problem with it is that I'm not quite sure how I'll handle it with my future kids, lol. I'm not so bad with the hubby. I think I take very good care of him when he's sick, but you won't find me in the bathroom with him when he's throwing up (I'll most likely be in the furthest room I can get to in the house!). Hopefully with kids, maternal instincts will help me just ignore the fear!

I am up at the fine hour of 330am because DD8 is still freaking out over a horseshoe crab (dead) we saw in a museum over vacation. Indeed, she has two hermit crabs in her room too (though horseshoe crabs arent really crabs, she doesn't get that.) But she's been up quite a while freaking out about their "slimy little legs".

Mind you this hs crab she worries about was dead, and in another country. I'm not even pointing out there were likely some near the beach where she delightedly swam all day today.....

My irrational fear is spiral staircases (particularly of the unending, no landing, sort that you find in old cathedrals, lighthouses or other historical buildings. I can't focus on which step my foot is on and am terrified I'll go tail over teakettle all the way to the bottom. Someone has to walk directly in front of me, preferably letting me hold their shoulder for my stability.

OK, haven't seen these mentioned yet, so I really feel foolish because I must be the only one....but here goes.....

When I go on the Peter Pan ride at WDW with any of my small grandchildren I am always afraid that they will fall out of their seat and fall down to the bottom of the attraction. I am always telling my DD's to "hold on tight" to the kids, and if they (DGC) are riding with me I hold on to them so tight that I probably come close to injuring their insides!!

My other fear is of being in an MRI machine and there being a fire and I can't get out of the machine and the staff runs for their life and forgets about me! This is exceptionally unreasonable as I have NEVER even had an MRI...but if I ever have to, I'm sure that will be the day a fire will break out.


I know these are really silly,but they are really fears of mine...otherwise I consider myself a pretty sane person

Only read the first page, but IMO there is no such thing as an unreasonable fear. A fear is a fear, you have no control over it.

Now to answer the question. My biggest fears is snakes, heights.

Just recently (the first week of August to be exact) DH, DD and I went on vacation to Branson Missouri. We went to a magic/illusion show called Kirby. We were in the front row. Kirby brought out a huge python. I nearly jumped out of my seat, but fought the urge and cringed into my seat. For some unforeseen reason he held the python by the back end and let the head swoop down right in front of us.
I squealed, cover my eyes, and ducked my head. As the python swooped past me I actually felt its hot breath as it went by me. Thank goodness it only lasted for a split second and I didn't open my eyes.

When my sarcastic daugther tells me to "build a bridge and get over it", I say, "no, you can't make me" and really, start shaking a little!

Birds. Not the little tiny ones at the feeder, but parrot size and up. I seriously don't like parrots. Those beaks can crack nuts, what could they do to your fingers??? They poop everywhere and spread who knows what is in their waste....ewww..

I can relate to that -- it's not a huge fear but I WILL speed up to get past the truck. I either want to be WAY behind it or ahead of it. Maybe because my brother is a truck driver? Actually, I'm always paranoid that they won't actually see me & try to change lanes. Not that it would be intentional but they are bigger than me so either way -- not a good outcome.

My huge one is water/bridges type of thing. I suppose open bodies of waters like Lakes, Rivers. In my case, I don't think it's *too* insane because I never had the problem until many moons ago a bridge in CT collapsed...I remember the news stories. It had been a foggy early morning I believe and one guys report was that he was following tail lights & they just disappeared so he pulled over -- THEN they found out the bridge had plunged into the water below. My sister lives in CT, she had been over that bridge many times. It was after that, they started a HUGE re-checking of all the bridges around to look for fatigue, etc... I'm pretty sure there are several that never really got looked at or fixed.

I just know that if my car is plunging into water, I'm a goner and the fact that I would KNOW about it ahead of time as I'm falling just terrifies me. Doesn't stop me from driving over the bridges but yeah...I've been known to kind of hold my breath and try to deal with it as best I can to get to the other side safely.

I guess I shouldn't tell you that Bull Sharks have been found as far north as Illinois in the Mississippi river. They'll go in fresh water with no problems.. they've even been found in Lake Michigan.

snakes, flying, and heights. The first one is completely irrational, the second one I need lots of rum and coke-and I make sure I introduce myself on the way in and ask the pilot lots of inappropriate questions, like are you happy, did you get enough sleep, did you drink/take drugs recently? they usually just laugh at me. Then bring me my rum and coke. The last one I can get myself through, but only if it's not too high.

I'm also terrified of dying, and something happening to my daughter. If I told you all of my fears, I would make Woody Allen look normal.

I can relate to the something happening to my daughter. She went back to college yesterday, and my fear is that something will happen to her and I will never see her again!
