Hello,
Im new here. Just joined, but been lurking for days. From my understanding of what I have read ... if you stay at a Disney hotel you will get a plastic room key that acts as you tickets to the parks also. If you stay off Disney they are a plastic/nylon paper like ticket. Im sure someone more knowlegable will come along soon. -Michelle
Correct--
Onsite, they are your room key. A plastic credit card type key. It contains your room key, your park tickets, your dining plan (if you get that option), and your ability to receive fastpasses.
I'm sort of in the same boat as the above poster. We ordered our tickets from undercover tourist. Is there anyway to trade our tickets and have them put them on our room card?
Yes, you can use your room key to charge back to your room, also to have things you purchased in the parks delivered to the gift shop in your hotel. If you have purchased tickets with your hotel room, that will be your "key to the World" and you will just have one card. If you bought your tickets elsewhere, you'll have a hotel key and tickets separate.

Just take your tickets and your room card to the concierge and they will put the tickets on your room card. We've done this in the past, so you shouldn't have any problems!
Ridiculous isn't it? You'd think that for the price of an AP they could afford to give you a plastic pass. I was so surprised when I got mine and was kinda bummed out about it because I had seen my friend's Universal AP and hers was a plastic one with her picture on it, but I get a freakin' paper one?! huh?
The Guest Services CM who issued mine tried to make up an excuse saying "Then we'd have to charge you a fee to replace it." I said "If it were a card I'd have less need to replace it." And went on my merry way.
The "paper" passes are actually made of Tyvek (the same stuff you see them wrapping new construction with). It's extremely durable and less likely to tear than the plastic cards are to break. Guest Services CMs report that they replace more plastic tickets than "paper" tickets due to breakage and bending.
However, if you like the convenience of having your room key and your tickets together on one card, your lobby concierge should be able to take care of it for you if you're staying at a WDW resort.
