This past week I got a text message from Bell saying I can upgrade to one of their 3G Smartphones and yesterday I got the BlackBerry Curve 8330. Anyway the e-mail and everything else works however a few times yesterday and today the screen turns black ,the red light turns on and it re-starts itself. Also when it comes back on it says verifying software or something and when I called Bell tech support they were saying it might be the battery or something else. Anyway I am thinking it's something more then that so would they able to replace it with a brand new BlackBerry being the 8330 model, because we have 15 days to replace it and this should not happen to a brand new phone. Also because I have the 15 days if they suggested the fix it or replace the battery I would cancel my number with them and switch to Rogers because of what's stated on the contract.

Sound like the phone is a lemon. Have them replace it.

I'd be asking for a replacement. Can't you transfer your phone # from Bell to Rogers?

I'm on my 4th (?) 8830 from Bell.. they just tend to flake out on me. Never has been a problem getting a replacement.

I doubt they would although I never thought of asking that.
Phone number portability has been around for a while now. You can take your number with you if you choose to switch to Rogers. There may be some service charges involved. The tricky thing is you need to sign up with Rogers before you cancel with Bell in order to get the number transferred. Call Rogers and they should be able to explain what is involved. I would work with Bell first. If the 8330 is flakely then getting the same phone from Rogers isn't going to solve anything.

Well originally my contract was to be finished sometime this August, however I was able to switch early because of that text message I got saying to upgrade early for a 3G Smartphone. So that's why I am not sure I could take my number to Rogers since my new contract has just started as of February 14, 2009 and it's a 3 year deal, however even if I could switch to Rogers I would get the BlackBerry Bold. As for the 8330 being flakey if that's true I would not want that to happen to the replacement one, because the guy from Bell said they have not had any problems with it. Oh well I am going first thing tomorrow morning when they open to figure this out.

Well I should clarify my comments.. my 8830's were flakey, as was my 7250? I had before that. We have about 30 of them deployed now and I just got the luck of the draw with mine locking up or not turning on at all after a few months of use. I only know of 1 more in our group that required a replacement due to a locked up unit that wouldn't turn on (solid red light).

I switched from Bell to Rogers about 6 months before my contract was to end. My contract stated I would be subject to a cancellation fee of up to $300. I paid $86 to Bell. I had simply walked into Rogers and they took care of everything - I didn't even have to call Bell.

Rogers has MUCH better coverage here. I couldn't use my Bell cell phone inside my house!

as for the flakey factor - I have no idea.

I went this morning at 8:30 AM when the Bell World store opened and got the BlackBerry replaced within a few minutes and so far no problems.

My son had problems with his 8830 locking as well. It was replaced twice.

I have had three Rogers 8830s replaced. They just quit, blanked out, or turned themselves off. I eventually switched to a Bold. In my office we all had 8830s and more than 6 have had to be replaced out of 8. They are crapola. The Bolds are much more robust.

I had my Curve replaced in the first 3 months as it lost all of it;s sound. Rogers took it back but there is a way they can tell now if there is water damage and they warned me that if they see that, I cannot get a new one. There was no water damage - it simply stopped working, so it was replaced. As for keeping your number - very easy. Usually you just keep your sim card but as mentioned by OP, Rogers will take care of all of it.

I am surprised Bell let you out of your contract without a penalty though??

I was able to get that phone because last week Bell sent me a text message saying to upgrade to one of their 3G Smartphones to avoid me switching to Rogers, since my contract was originally to be up in August. So that's why there was no penalty for getting a new phone a few months early.

Well it happened again. I had the phone on all day after getting it fully charged and then when I turned it on a few minutes ago after clicking on the camera it would not come on and eventually it shut itself off and then turned itself back on. When I called Bell tech support they told me to bring it in for another replacement because of the 15 days, however the hardware in the phone is alright when I read them some numbers. Now I am seriously going to see if I can switch to Rogers.

I was wondering would Bell allow me to switch back to my previous cell phone, as long as I go back to the store before the 15 day period when I can bring it back and etc?

I've had my BB curve for about 6 months - nothing like that has ever happened, I have had no problems at all, and I am also with Bell. Ditto for everybody else I know with one (my brother has actually had the BB curve since it first came out) Keep replacing it until you get a good one.

They must be outsourcing the production now or something. :confused3

This past week I called Bell customer service and they said I can switch back to my old phone within the 15 days that I could replace my BlackBerry, so should this problem happen one more time that's what I am going to do.
