What are people putting in their One Ziplock bag?

I am getting stressed about the One Ziplock bag that we can take on the airplane. Can someone break this down for me.

We are going to Disney for six days. We are putting all our shampoo, aeresol, toothpaste, toothbrushes in our CHECKED luggage. What would I need to bring on the plane? Are people who bring these things on the plane just those that are just bringing a carryon luggage, or someone who is worried about losing their luggage? What am I missing and will I regret not having these things with me when I arrive at Disney and wait for my luggage from DME. I am bringing the facestick kind of suntan lotion for the kids to put on their face for the first day. Do I need to put that in a ziplock?

Right now I don't see a need for a ziplock, please tell me what I am forgetting!

Also, Can we bring drinks on the plane? We are flying Southwest. Can we bring a water bottle on the plane (if we buy it at the airport after security)?

Thanks! Seven days to go

The reason we are doing the ziplock thing is because we will have carryons only, no checked luggage. We will also be using DME and arriving late. So, for us we want our things to stay with us and have immediately upon check in. I don't want to wait for my stuff, with 2 small kids, we need our things with us, plus I am worried about our luggage getting lost. Also, we will only be there for 5 days and have a washer/dryer in our villa, so we can pack light.
As to what I have put inside the ziplock bags, it is things that you mentioned you will be putting in your checked luggage. We were able to find 3oz or less bottles of everything we need, like toothpaste, hair gel, hair spray, sunscreen, shampoo/conditioner, shaving cream. I put about 3-4 things in each ziplock(quart size)and we have 3 bags all together and 4 of us flying.

I don't think you have anything to worry about! :thumbsup2
Looks like we'll be there at the same time!!!

When my DH and went to WDW last month, we put back-ups for items we would need within 24 hours in case we were separated from our checked luggage. For us, this meant shaving cream, suntan lotion, mositurizer, mascara, face cleanser, eye drops, hair conditioner, hair gel, contact lens solution and toothpaste.

To avoid having to seperately declare them, we also put our liquid prescriptions in the bags becuase they were small enough and fit.

Everything was in a 3 oz. or smaller container and everything was originally labeled except one item. For that item, I put a color label on it with the contents and it passed the quick visual inspection without a secondary screening.

Remember, you get one bag per passenger.

Our checked bags arrived with us in both directiosn and many of our the items in our Kip Zip were never used.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

You only need the ziplock if you want/need to bring liqud or gel in your carryons. I had some hand cream and sunscreen samples and the rest was in my checked luggage. If you don't need anything liquid or gel prior to getting your bags you don't need the ziplock.

Yes, you can bring anything purchased after the security check onboard including drinks.

Desnik - just FYI you can check your luggage through as checked bags without having ME deliver it. Just don't put the ME luggage tags on them and pick them up at the carosel yourself. You can then bring them to ME and the driver will load them under the bus. Your bags will travel with you to the resort but you won't have to carry them on the airplane. We did this in October as we arrived in the late evening and I didn't want to wait for the bags via ME.

I check most of my stuff, but I do like to have sunscreen, mouthwash, toothpaste with me if I need it when I get to the resort. I add a travel size Purell and I'm good to go.

You know how you're (probably) going to carry on whatever you'll need for the first about 24 hours of your vacation, in case your luggage gets misdirected? That's all you need in the way of 'ziploc' stuff as well. I brought toothpaste, deodorant, conditioner and a suntan stick. Everything else went in my checked luggage, and even the ziploc bag went home in my checked bags. Don't forget, you're not going to some isolated destination - while maybe the specific brands you use may not be available, most gift shops have a reasonable stock of toiletries.

Are there 3oz bottles of sunscreen as I have never really looked for this size but if we are wanting suncreen for when we arrive and don't have our bags yet as we are using ME then I will have to buy some. Can anyone tell me what they have bought for there trip to put in there carry on

I've also been travelling for job interview lately, and I get super paranoid about any sort of spill onto my suit. I've only had it happen once in all my years of travelling, but as long as there is an alternative, I hate checking liquids.

I was able to find a travel size of sunscreen at Pharma Plus. (It was their store brand).
I was thinking on using an empty travel shampoo container and put sunscreen in it if I was not able to find the travel size.

My dh's company handed out 3 oz. sunscreen thingies that clip onto your bag, so I brought that. Also got one that came as a 'freebie' on a normal size sunscreen bottle.
When I travel with any type liquid, it goes in a zip-loc baggie. I've had too many 'spills' in the past. So, it all goes in a baggie by itself now.

Wal-mart has small sunscreens with a clip on them

We purchased spill proof bags at Target for our upcoming trip as I have also had spills occur in my luggage. :sad2:

They are in the same section as the luggage and I got ours on sale for $9. They come in a set of three with varying sizes. :cool1:

I am going to put our contact stuff and sunscreen in our carry-ons but that's about it. Southwest couldn't possibly loose our luggage on a non-stop flight. Right? :lmao:

do these things have to be in their in their orginal package?

my hair gel/shampoo is in a big bottle..
i can't get my brand of hair gel in travel size--it is okay if i just put it in a clear bottle that fits the size requirement? will this be a issue?

Maybe, maybe not - get some cheap travel-size products, empty and rinse the bottles, and replace with your own product.

See www.minimus.biz - the site stocks/sells all kinds of travel sizes! Not necessarily what the poster above uses, but for example they have several choices of travel size sunscreen/suntan lotion.

It really depends on the airport and screener. I was told on another forum by someone who works for the TSA that as long as the container is the required size, it's fine. But then the screener at Newark Airport told me that I couldn't have an unlabeled container and threw it away. :confused3 I asked around and the results are mixed- some people aren't having a problem, others are having their toiletries thrown out. Try it at your own risk.

Thanks for posting as I will be sure to take a look at Wal-mart and see if I can find something. Otherwise I will put it in a small sample size shampoo bottle that I have from a hotel I was at last as I knwo that will be the right size to take ont he plane

I love Minimus its great! :thumbsup2 I also check all my luggage now, that way I have no problems.

I'm also planning to put the bulk of my toiletries in my checked bag. My Ziploc bag will contain trial sizes of sunblock, saline solution, hand cream, a tube of Carmex, a tube of lipstick, my spare contact lenses, and the smaller size of Ocean nasal saline spray.

That's your best bet, IMHO. Lately dh has been doing alot of 1-3 day business trips and since he needs every minute he needs to carry on everything. We have just decided that anything that makes it easier for the TSA agent to get you through is worth the additional few minutes. I take with me and and send him with only clearly marked travel size bottles in the "ziplock" :).

Yes, this means emptying out the sample and refilling it with our preferred brand but if the container clearly states "shampoo" and "3 oz" it isn't going to get any extra screening. OTOH with the clear plastic travel size bottle the screener is going to have to figure out if he/she thinks its 3oz or less and depending on the person/day/airport this dosen't always go smoothly.

Have a safe flight and a great trip.
