I'm thinking of looking at a cruise for our family during the Easter break here (we're out the week going into Easter Sunday) and I'm considering a variety of ports. If I want to book something out of Canaveral, what other airports are there that would work other than flying into Orlando?

I'm hoping I can get a better fare to one of those airports. Otherwise, I might have to look into cruising out of Miami, but not sure which airlines fly direct from Newark to Miami. Know Continental does, but not Jet Blue.

Thanks for the help.

Sanford is the other airport in the area, though it has no major airlines. Pan Am flies to Sanford from Stewart, NY.

The Miami area has three airports - MIA, FLL, and PBI. jetBlue flies to FLL and PBI currently, and will start flying to MIA in January 2006 (not bookable yet). Both MIA and FLL are convienently located to the ports (if you cruise out of Port of Miami, go to MIA; cruise out of Port Everglades, go to FLL), PBI is not.

Though airfare to the Miami/Lauderdale area is traditionally a lot more than Orlando, especially during spring break.

Well, IMO Orlando is still the best option with the combination of a very efficient, well-run airport, lots of direct flights and easy access to local transport infrastructure. Melbourne FL (MLB) is closest to Port Canaveral, but has only two direct flights from the NYC area, both Delta/Comair from JFK (this according to the MLB's website). You could do a connecting flight, likely thru Atlanta, but I get the impression this is not an attractive option for you.

As for the Miami are flights, there are plenty, given that you have 3 airports to choose from (as MAH4546 points out). Frankly I would much prefer to fly into FLL or PBI than deal with the chaos that is usually Miami Int'l. So since your preferred departure airport is EWR, you will have plenty of direct flights to choose from on Continental, JetBlue and my fav' Delta/Song.

Have agreat trip!

Hi Janet,

It's about a 3-4 hour drive from Ft Lauderdale or Miami airports to Port Canaveral.

MCO is definitely the most convenient, about an hour drive. Tampa is closer to Canaveral than FLL or MIA.

Melbourne International Aiprort is the closest commercial airport to Port Canaveral. It's a smaller airport, but growing. Air fare will probably be slightly more expensive since only Delta and the Delta Connection servies it. But the perks are your baggage is waiting for you by the time you get off the plane and go to baggage claim, and then when you are leaving the check-in lines and security lines are very short.

during Easter not being that great. Of course, they won't to Miami either. I have been getting some prices for cruises out of Miami and wondered if I should consider departing from TX or NO (but those fares can't be great either). JetBlue is starting Miami from Newark I think in January but you can't book yet so I'd have to wait and see if something good comes long after I have to book the cruise.

I hate having to travel during holiday times...but a necessary evil once the kids are older and can't miss school.

Thanks for your info.
