My DS is 9yo, in the 4th grade. I'm thinking that he is getting too old to dress up (although he doesn't agree). I asked his teacher about it and she said that they do dress up and have a party, but no masks. So I am trying to think of a costume for him. He is a BIG boy, like 5'4" and 140lbs. I don't want him to look ridiculous, so I'm trying to think of something that he will like and I will be okay with too. :confused3 Any ideas for older kids costumes?

I still dress up for Halloween and I am 37! I don't think I ever stopped come to think of it.

What does your son think he's like to dress up as? What are his interests? Pirate is always a good bet and easy to do, Ninja, Doctor, or maybe traditional scary costumes with makeup instead of masks like a vampire or skeleton or Zombie. Zombie is the easiest and with several recent Zombie movies might appeal to him!

He can always go with some type of a sports theme or a pirates theme just for some ideas. Sometimes just an old fashioned homemade costume works well also as they get older. Like an old man, hobo, fbi/cia agent, soldier, or even a construction worker.
Also, if you have other children and you go with a family theme to all dress up. We have done this in the past and is alot of fun. We have gone with the star wars theme, peter pan theme, and of course, a disney character theme.
This year we were considering a medieval times or pirates of the carribean theme. Not sure yet.
Anyway, I hope that these ideas help you out. Have a great Halloween!!!

My kids stopped dressing up for neighborhood trick or treat in 7th grade.

They started dressing up to go to a friend's house for a Halloween party after that.

I would say continue to dress up as long as there is a party at school and everyone wears a costume.

DS10 is in 4th grade and they still trick or treat but do not dress up at school. It is a group of families that go around together so from 4 on up to 7th grade last year.

The older kids seem to pick costumes they could throw together quickly, hobo, sports fan (many Eagles jerseys with green face paint appeared at my door:thumbsup2 ) and zombies, scary creatures.

DS has been a baseball player for the last two Halloweens so he wants to do soemthing differnt but he has no idea what.

I'm 36 and still dress up! LOL And I don't see myself quitting anytime soon either. :) We love Halloween in our house so I don't put restriction on dressing up, only that the costumes are appropriate and non-offensive, age appropriate, that kind of thing. Anyway, maybe your DS can be a football player?? He doesn't have to wear the helmet, just the outfit, or a basketball player, a doctor, a wizard, I could go on and on.....

Fourth grade is not to old to dress up. For school, follow his lead. He will know what the other guys are going to do and may want to follow suit. A sports theme is always safe. i would give him total freedoom with-in your family's value for trick -r treat. About that age DS wanted just a scary but not evil (we did not allow evil) mask for the evening activites. They grow up too fast. Let him be little as long as possible.

My stepson just turned 11, and he is still very much into dressing up and going trick or treating. He has been a character every year in the past, last year he was anikin from star wars. This year he says he wants to dress up as something scary, like a zombie or vampire. :goodvibes

34 year old here, still dressing up, although it changed from trick or treating to parties as I got older. DD is 11 and planning her costume for this year already.

I've never heard of a 9yo being to old to dress up for Halloween. Nope!

My DD (just turned 13yo) has said she's not dressing up this year (will be her first time). I totally understand that, as she just started high-school and all of her friends are 14 & 15 years old.

DS9 has 2 costumes planned:

1) Chandler from friends (sweater vest & all :rotfl: ) for his school party

2) some video game character for trick or treating

Our youngest has just turned 13 and we've told him that this will be his last year to trick or treat. He starts High School next year and I think that that is too old to trick or treat but he can still dress up for parties or MNSSHP. :)

I remember stopping trick or treating probably around 6th or 7th grade or so.

But after that I still dressed up for Halloween. There were always parties and other activities to go to all dressed up. :thumbsup2

I see no problem with anyone dressing up. It is HALLOWEEN. :)

Let kids be kids. They are only young once. Let them enjoy it. When they are to "cool" to dress up, you will be missing it. So enjoy it while you can. :)
