What about those of us who DO like disagreement?

Ahh! I think I see what you're saying now SPAGo. I'm thinking maybe you're talking about last night? I missed most of that. I saw a lot of it, but I went to bed around midnight. I really don't remember most of it. :D If I'm wrong, I'm sorry. :D I'm not talking about any one post or any one poster, just posts and threads in general. :D

I think there are some who may be scared to carry their controversey and disagreements to the DB, where I think they may feel not up to the challenge of some finely honed debaters. Instead, they try to ply their trade on the CB

Groosch....who could possibly fit THAT description??? :teeth:

ROTFLOL!!!

So how about moving the threads that are getting too heated over to the debate board instead of locking them.......

::::::::: shrug ::::::::::::::

b/c then the db becomes the dumping ground.

some posts should be locked, imho.

last night was definitely an example, but definitely not the only one i've seen.

by the time most of them are locked they've deteriorated too far to even be a debate any longer.

Sorry but the CB isn't a prayers and pixie dust board it's a community board. It's a place for everyone to exchange thoughts and ideas respectfully. Then again, so is the DB. We just limit the topics at the DB to debates only. If you want Prayers and Pixie Dust go to the IB. It's blissfully peaceful.

Almost any topic is appropriate for the CB imo. Heck look at the gun topic just yesterday. It was an interesting topic with no nastiness! That's the way the DB and the CB should be.
All people have to do is post respectfully. We should all be adult enough to agree to disagree.

because there's a difference between an argument and a debate.

When I was a moderator, I moved, I think, only 3 threads to the DB. They were threads that had reached a very high level of passionate debate, well beyond what belonged on the CB, but where still civil and not full of personal inuendos. Threads that wind up as a foraging ground for personal attacks, inuendos, putdowns, etc, should be locked, not moved. (Per Moderating, 101 ;))

Plus there are topics that have been done to death on the DB.

Part of the problem imo, is that people tend to open the life on the CB. If you open it you need to expect differing opinions since we are vast and diverse group. If you want blanket acceptance you need to talk to a mirror.

There is also a difference with those in power. Since again, imo, mods are human and thus different, one may never know how to post on a certain subject depending on the mod who may read it. I know that some attacks are passed by by some and not by others.

As far as moving things to the DB. The DB regulars enjoy debate, not being made out to be the black sheep of the DIS. The DB is not the place to send a post without it's supper.

First of all, the CB has room for a lot of subjects on it, including Prayers and PD. . .

Secondly, until somene can show me where they were deleted for simply posting an unpoplar opinion, I think that is a totally bogus argument and one that's really getting old. . .

**stands up and applauds!**

When I was a child-my parents, their friends and my
aunts and uncles used to get drunk and argue about
politics. They'd yell, swear, stand on chairs and cry; the
next morning everyone was loving family again. I also
think a little yelling and airing one's opinion is
sometimes cleansing. It's clearly not fair to yell
at someone who won't yell back though-that's
bullying. Some people know how to have a good fight,
others are simply bullies. There's a difference.
I personally have recently used my ignore function for
those I think bully. Wish I had an "ignore" function for
real life-that would be fabulous!

Very interesting thread. I for one have a very soar spot for certain moderators that in essence "have it out" for a poster and consistently "delete" threads that "they" feel are "sarcastic" or "argumentative" when they are absolutely not, and especially not compared to what others have posted. I have had this happen to me personally a few times and it is very irritating. It is especially irritating when moderators themselves post very sarcastic remarks or even argumentative things as well, yet we are not allowed to respond and in essence end up with the post removed. It reminds me of how much I dislike the fact that these are not 100% public boards. But such is life!!! :D

Hear!Hear! WillyJ!!!!!!!!!(DD whistling and clapping wildly!!!)

I don't that for most of us the issue is a differing opinion as much as it is the delivery of that differing opinion. I am always interested in hearing what others think and why. It gives me things to think about, other viewpoints to consider, and teaches me things I don't know. I may not always agree, but it is still interesting.

However, when a post is written in a nasty, disrespectful, hurtfully sarcastic(I happen to agree that a degree of sarcasm can be amusing...I've been known to use it myself a few times;) )
manner, it dilutes the message or point the poster is trying to make, because my first thought when I read that kind of post isn't "Well, that's a good point". My first thought is usually "Why would I care to know the opinion of someone who is so obnoxious and nasty?"

Respect is the key. There's really not any clearer way to say it. If you don't give respect, don't expect to get it. And if you don't get respect, don't claim that it's because you hold an opinion that differs from the majority. Your opinion has less to do with it than your delivery of your opinion.

JMHO.
(Thanks to Dan for pointing out my triple post. God knows what this kooky computer(or computer operator;) )does to make things like that happen!)

DD, you said so beautifully how I feel! I like differences of opinion. It really makes the world more fun and exciting to see and hear all of these opinions. I just don't like it when it is done in a disrespectful manner, that's all. I think people can have very civil debates that never need to turn into anything nasty... actually I know we can since I have seen it here many times myself. This board is full of a bunch of really neat people with a wide range of thoughts and interests and I really like coming here and seeing that :)

But don't you think that people read too much into certain other people's posts? Some people are very sensitive and think they are being attacked when in reality it's merely a difference of opinion.

If I say, "I don't like mushrooms," it doesn't mean, "I don't like anyone who eats mushrooms." Unfortunately, many people interpret things that way here on the DIS.

addicted, how dare you say you don't like me b/c I like mushrooms. That's just downright mean!!!! :p :p
