What about Rain gear? Rain coats or umbrella's?

I hear so much about RAIN... I know it rains in Florida every day but it is usually a short rain shower and that is it... on the norm.

Do you think I should get disposable rain gear for us for our WDW trip?
Someone said the Disney ones that are heavier are harder to lug around and such... I want to be prepared but also don't want anything I am not going to need.

What are your thoughts?

Before our trip last January I went to the Dollar Store and pruchased quite a few plastic ponchos. I kept 4 with us in my bag and if it rained we would pull one out and use it. After the rain was over we would either put them in the rental stroller or throw them out. I will do the same for this trip in January.

We bought some disposable ponchos at Wal*Mart for 88 cents each. They're small enough that we can carry them around, and cheap enough that we can throw them out if we use them.

We'll also take a rain-coat in case it looks like we have day that gets washedout.

I usually go with the cheap ones to have some cover in the rain storm, but then can throw away and not worry about drying it out and folding it up each and every time. Walmart sells them for less then a buck. I take along a few, keep it in its package until needed each trip and save the ones I don't use for next time.

Maybe we're just lucky but over the last 4 trips we've taken, only once did we have a period of rain that lasted more than a few minutes (and it was only an hour). Rather than carry around rain gear we just head for a gift shop or some other building when we see the clouds rolling in and wait it out inside.

We do bring our rain gear with us each trip though but usually end up leaving it in the rental car, even when it is a little overcast. The disposable ponchos are a good idea though.

I'm taking several of the cheap ponchos with us so I can throw them away if I need to. I also bought a small umbrella just in case DH doesn't want to wear a poncho.

I personally wouldn't take a raincoat because they can get too warm, even the breathable ones. I bought an expensive "breathble" coat before I went for the first time, and never wore it. We have been at a time where it wasn't the usual "rain shower" and it rained a lot, but still we wouldn't wear raincoats because it was too hot. We've kept the disney ponchos we bought a long time ago and they are easy to fit inside a rucksack in case they are needed.

I bought a bunch of disposables at Target for 89 cents each they are Coleman red and green ones for the adults. I was lucky abnough to purchase 3 rain/sun jackets for the kids lightweight at the disney store on clearance for $5. each the ponchos are too big for them. The jackets are nice they also have uv sun protection with hoods.

We were just there for 10 days (Aug 15-24) and we did not see a drop of rain ! We had brought all of our rain gear, but didn't use it once. I say skip the gaer !! Good luck !! :thumbsup2

Every time we visit Disney we encounter those 15 minute, sky opens up type of showers at least once or twice during the week. We refuse to let any type of rain stop us. So we always come prepared for rain. We have two small kids and always have a stroller (with storage). We always carry those really cute fold up rain jackets from disneydirect.com. They fold up really small and easy to carry in a backpack. We also keep a couple of ponchos with us to cover the stroller in case of strong rains.

By the way, the rain gear comes in handy on Splash Mountain in MK and rapids in AK! We wear them to avoid getting super soaked on either.
;)

Get a couple of $0.99 Coleman ponchos in the camping aisle at Target or Walmart I always bring a couple extra 'cause they are so cheap...that way you can just throw them away when you are done. I don't recommend an umbrella way to hard to navigate crowds without poking someone's eye out ;)

Weather really depends on the time of year. In the summer, you get about a 3 hour torrential downpour, then it disappears. On the other hand, fall, winter, or spring rains can last longer.

The cheap ponchos are the best way to go. They are easy to carry, and they can be tossed when you are finished. Also, try to plan your day around those times. Each of the parks have some pretty big areas that are indoors/covered, so use those to eat up some rainy time.

Suggestions:
MK: HOP, Philharmagic, COP, Mansion, POTC, or use it as an excuse to ride Splash multiple times
Epcot: The Land, The Seas, EEA, AA, or Innoventions
MGM: BATB, Animation, VOTLM, Muppets, or Bear in the Big Blue House
DAK: FOTLK, Nemo, Rafiki's Planet Watch

That heavy summer rain usually comes in the afternoon. When we went in July we would get to the parks early in the morning, go back to the hotel in the afternoon, then back out at night after the rain. When we went this past May, the rain always came in the late afternoon as well. When we went in December (two years) there were two full days of dark and some light rain. Never been in the fall (I see you are going next month). We are going in October for our first fall trip.

* Check the weather report the night before or morning you are leaving, so you know if you need the gear for that day. That will impact your carry-on. It would be nice to pack the stuff but if you are doing Magical Express you will not have your bags for a few hours and you will likely go to a park before you get the bags. This past trip I had to carry-on the gear because the report was calling for rain in the afternoon when we knew we would be in the MK. It did rain heavy for about 15 minutes. Would have been enough to get us soaked and sad but we came prepared!

just back from wdw aug22-27. it rained 3 days out of 5. i would not call it a brief shower, the first day it rained it lasted a couple of hours, the next day was a washout from about 4 pm on lightening thunder and downpours i don't think any poncho or umbrella would have helped that day, the third day it rained it was around 5 pm and it lasted until about 8: 30 pm stopped just in time for the wishes fireworks - which by the way were fantastic. i saw people with raincoats and boy they must have been hot it was 97 degrees. if anything i would take umbrellas, we just stayed underneath any covering we could find and went to a couple of shows, overall we really on missed out on a half a day. have a great trip

I'm bothered by all the talk about buying plastic/nylon ponchos and then "tossing them". Thats a lot of plastic being thrown away into our landfields. Can't anyone think of an eco-friendly solution to the frequent rain or are we really that conditioned to be self-absorbed. Sorry for the little rant but all this waste really bugs me. If you're gonna buy a ponch at least recycle it. But I would think a jacket or an umbrella would be a better solution. :confused3

I'm with princessofcandles... Buy something you can use again! We use the same rain jackets on every trip we take.

we do the disposable ponchos! got them at the dollar tree 2 for $1 this week!!!:woohoo:
