I went to the camera store today and they suggested the H-5. What does everyone thing of this one? Thanks for you help and imput - I'm clueless

You may want to look at the Canon S3 is and the Panasonic fz50, the replacement for the fz30, just hitting the streets.

All three are in the ultra zoom category. (Sony and Canon 36-432 mm, Panasonic 35-420mm.)

I don't think you are going to see any reviews on the fz50 for another month or so.

There is also a Panasonic TZ1 30-350 mm zoom. Designed to be more of a travel camera with less control.

I have both the H5 and TZ1 and like them both. I'll pass on the Canon only because I don't know anything about it, but it seems popular. The TZ1 is the travel everywhere camera for me. The H5 whenever the wife lets me us it. Oh Oh :duck: :duck: :duck: She was in the room.

The flash on the H5 is slow to recyle, but it is the most powerful of the three. I took pictures at a party and was getting clean flash shots it ISO 320 (had iso on auto) up to 30 feet.

The TZ1 I got pictures only because I had the camera with me. It lays in the palm of your hand. Good for a 10x. You won't have shutter speed control like the H5 other than by changing the ISO.

Good luck on your search. I'm sure you will find the one you like.

Kelly, you mentioned that you tested the H5 - what did you think of it?

Manning, so you are happy with your H5? I can't buy a Canon, I'm mad at them because my other Canon didn't last very long.

I'm not really sure what I want, since this is my first digital. I think having a black and white option is neat, a stabilizer, view finder and I need it to be able to take motion pictures.

Thanks again for all of your help. I'm so confused!!

I just bought an H2 a couple weeks ago. Looked at the spec of it and the H5 and other than some differences in the LCD viewer size ( 2.5 in vs 3 in) MegaPixels ( 6 vs 7) and the digital zoom spec (seemed very minor but I dont remember the exact difference) they were identical. The H2 was on sale for $150 less than the H5 so I bought it. I think if the 7 MP is more important to you then go for the H5 If not then the H2 will do very nice!

Unless super size prints are made or heavy cropping The H2 would be fine.

For some reason there is pixel chasing going on out there. It takes more than that to get good pictures.

Only had the H5 for a couple of weeks, but yes I'm happy with it.

My first Digi was the Sony DSC-F717 with a killer carl zeiss lens. At the time it had one of the fastest shutter lag times.

I remember paying $90 for a 128M memory stick...!
Only about 8 months ago I moved to a canon rebel.
I don't have any other info on the newer models, sorry.

here's a link of my comparison test between Canon S3 vs Sony H5, they each have their pros and cons. PS: about camera not lasting too long, I've had the same problem with my Fuji A200, Fuji F10, Minolta Dimage A200. They don't build things they way the used to.

I have the H5 and love it! I play with it around the house, but I went to the Bronx Zoo this week and was able to use it in different modes. Granted, I am still learning, but the shots I took were sooo much better than my old camera. I even tried manual shots - to my surprise I did better than I thought. If someone can tell me how to download a pic here, I'll do it. Thanks!

Nikon have bought out an S10 that is in the same category as these others. It may be worth waiting for the reviews of it.

I almost got a Sony h-5 but now I found a kodak with the same zoom as it and that's what I'm getting

I think I am going with the H-2. It's my first digital camera and I'm also leaving next month - I need time to play with it! I think I will be happy with it. Thanks for all of your thoughts and suggestions.
