Did you all see it? I CANNOT believe it. The Academy Award winner for Best Song was..."It's Hard Out Here For a P*mp." This is NOT a joke.

Even the title is so icky I used an asterisk. I did a search for the lyrics, and Oh, MY!

This was the BEST song they could find in any movie?

Exactly who votes for these things?

I have no clue who votes for best song. I missed most of the Oscars last night, just saw a few minutes here and there. Missed all the nominated best song performances. I did listen to the Laura Ingraham show(radio talk show) this morning and she went over some of the words of that song and did her own bleep of the words on the radio. Well, I'm just glad Brokeback Mountain song didn't win, whatever song that was.

Which song did Dolly Parton sing for which movie, was that for Brokeback Mountain? :confused3 I missed most if the Oscars, so I don't know which song was for which movie or who sang what.

Dolly Parton sand a song called "Travelin' Thru," from a movie called "Transamerica," which I never heard of (much less saw).

Answering my own question that Dolly Parton sang "Travelin Through" from Transamerica movie. Found it on the Academy Awards Website. :teeth:

ANY of the song choices. :sad2: I wish it was still the good old days when a "Big" singer of the time would be paid mega bucks to sing the title song of a movie. Now, we are stuck with the crap we heard last night.

None of the nominated songs were all that good. I just downloaded "Travelin' Thru" for free on iTunes and it's kinda catchy but incredibly repetitive. "It's Tough to Be..." was simply a lukewarm rap song.

It's funny because the two rap songs that have been nominated for an Oscar have both won - Eminem's "Lose Yourself" and this one. Eminem's song was surprisingly good and perhaps deserved the win, but this category in general is a joke anymore. There aren't any musicals anymore which I think was the purpose of this award.

The one thing I will say is that "It's Tough to Be..." was the most integral to the movie (considering the movie was about a singer. Still, it's Hollywood's attempt to be hip and edgy. When you think about it, this award, along with Crash's wins were the SHOCKERS of the night and the things that are being talked about on various movie websites.

My mom and I discussed this too. Its a sad statement on our culture, isn't it?

I remember when the musical scores by John Williams used to win.

Pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp, pimp.

I wasn't crazy about any of the songs, but it was important to the movie, so it got points for that.

Best Musical Score and Best Song are two different things.

John Williams was robbed this year (once again).

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: ..................pimp.

I actually liked "It's Hard out there for a Pimp" It plays an intregral part in Hustle & Flow, and I can never get the hook out of my head, and I'm not a rap fan at all. I too downloaded the Dolly song off of iTunes, and liked that one also.

Sounds like I missed a good one, LOL. :lmao: :rolleyes2 'Entertainment' does get closer to that bottom of that barrel every year I guess.

I think it depends on what you identify as 'Entertainment'. DH is in complete agreement with you as he goes to the movies for sheer escapsim, he isn't interested in drama (if he wants drama, he has a conversation with one of his adult children). The only movie nominated for any award that he saw was Narnia. However, I think the real interesting stories and the real outstanding performances this year were in movies that really pushed some buttons.

I was not surprised that It's Hard Out There for a Pimp won. As someone else said, it was really integral to the story. But frankly I think the real reason is that the Academy wanted to show it could "get jiggy." As RyMickey pointed out, the only two nominated rap songs have both won awards.

And personally, I don't think John Williams was 'robbed'. Just like Alan & Marilyn Bergman who kept winning oscars for the same schlock year after year, IMO John Williams has really not come up with anything original or interesting for awhile now.

He may have a point, I guess. It may BE hard out there for a pimp.

But THAT is the best song Hollywood can come up with in a whole year. It isn't ME saying it, Hollywood itself said this is the best they can do. This is their Best Song.

IMHO, that's pretty sad.

Is Pimp a dirty word? LOL! Would you be more comfortable with "It's Hard Out Here For a Procurer of Prostitutes"? Doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

It's not really so shocking when you consider how many actresses have won Oscars for playing a "hooker with a heart of gold". Hollywood is all about the skin trade! :lmao:

Actually Rosemarie - you are wrong. Brokeback Mountain was not even nominated for music - song. But Brokeback did win the Oscar for music - score and I totally agree - that score was beautiful!

Oh, my gosh. I got a tag. I feel so EXTREMELY special. I'm no longer a tag virgin! I've been deflowered by the Tag Fairy.

It may be hard out there for a pimp, but it's a great day for me!
